IT was an AWESOME SEASON. Next year, I think we need to slam'em when the gettin is good, refine our techniques and strategy, fish the low light periods of the day, and make a few more overnight trips. There are other fish out there and we need to start preparing to make our run at those other species.

Todd, Bummer about your trip. Just down hill from you is where we started at 46:14x 124:58 was the first tuna. Best bite was the 46:05 line where keywest plugged his boat in short order with 58 on board. We put 101 tuna on the deck in an all out blood bath. Even the Garibaldi boys came north for the fish and found them in the same area.
Was a short but fun season.

Bernie,
Thanks for twisting the knife in a bit deeper! We knew before we left the dock that if we really wanted a high chance to catch fish, we'd have to run down your way. We thought there'd be at least some stragglers that didn't get the memo to head South, but NO. Good job on your trip!
I'm seeing some good South winds forecast this week. Maybe an October tuna trip isn't out of the question when we get back.

We turned and ran to Ilwaco as well as Terra fin showed the water moving south. Ran right to the 125--46 line and ran north a bit to the 46.3 line and started trolling and nailed a couple on the trolling gear. Then we moved around a bit looking for the boils and picked up several more. Did not kill them like Key West. We ran with them most of the day.
There is much more for me to learn about fishing tuna before I put in numbers like Key West had (60+ at the end of their day).
Had a great time--I look forward to next year and learning more techniques to fishing these fish.
Water was good other than a few rough patches--all is good, But I am thinking this is about season--maybe 1 more weekend.

We need to take advantage of the y-tail and Blue Fin Tuna on the front edge of the albacore migration when it hits our coast. Also, someone needs to land a thresher or billfish - they are out there.....We only have 9 months to wait.
FYI, a friend of mine fished on the Fury with his company (10 guys) last Sunday (9/28) they reported only 25 fish. 50/50 baitfish, and overall slow fishing in slop.

We had a marlin kooked up for a while this year mid-August. They are there. Quite a few of the guys said they had seen sailfish. I didn't, but one would have to jump right in front of me for me to see it.

It was around Aug 20, when we were fishing around 46 35 and 125 02. It was the first day anybody had been to that area, for awhile. I went there because, when I got up at 1:30 there was a new Terrafin picture. There were 2 commercial friends of mine in the area, and that was it. We had an excellent bait stop going with fish boiling all around us, and I remember seeing a big-ass boil off of my stern, and thinking WTF? Anyway, about 20 dead tuna later, there was a guy sitting on the bow tote, with the rod bent pretty good. He said "Skipper, this ain't a tuna". He was using a jigmaster reel that had a full spool of pink Ande 30 lb test, and the reel was getting low. I turned around to tell the rest of the guys to reel up so I could chase it, and the SOB came out of the water. All I saw was the tail and the splash. The guy, 2 other fellas, and my deckhand were looking right at it. My deckhand's eyes looked like dinner plates. He didn't know if it was a sailfish or a marlin. He went home and looked in a book, and he said it was definitely a marlin, and he estimated it to be 3-400 pounds. What was weird to think was that it boiled off of my stern, ate a 'chovy, and was hooked all of that time on a #6 Owner Flyliner hook.
I carry a marlin jig with me that Mike Halbur, the first guy to catch one on the WA coast quite a few years ago, gave me.
That's my story--it was quite a day!
Kevin
