Chasing tuna will blow your mind as well as your load! Tuna don't hit you line and sit there like a log. They peel off a metric ass ton (yes that is a form of measurement) of line of before you even know what the hell is going on. Huge difference from fishing up here. Now don't get me wrong, I love it up here, but you gotta have one of those big fat muthas spool you! You'll lose your mind. Too much fun for words. I grew up fishing out of Oceanside and SD and watching Grandpa land a 102# YF on his 14ft SeaNymph and ending up in the water when that bitch beat me within an inch of my life when we got it aboard. Tommy, if you wanna go down and Hit the R3 or some other long ranger then I wanna go just to see your face when your rod tip hits the water.

When I go down there....I want to go all in....not just a 5 or 8 day...I want to go on a 10 to 16 day trip.

And if an XXXXH tip hits the water....that means the game is over and fish go bye bye with your rig. Ain't gonna happen brotha.

Damn, 10-16 days. I love fishing but 10-16 days is too much like my like being back in "go-fast" training. No thanks! Wait, I think I could stand it if there's booze and women. Ya, you're right about the rods, I was over exagerating but once you get a bullet on your line you'd be grinning from ear to ear. What the hell does a 10-16 day trip go for???

Is this the right kind of Yellowtail in the link? or is that something else?

Yes, same Yellowtail, however, I believe the article has an error. Yellowtails are not in the Tuna family, they are in the Jack family (Amberjack, Jack Crevalle, Pampano, Roosterfish to name a few). Many people confuse Yellowtails with Yellow Fin, which are in the Tuna family.

Anybody care to explain to me why Yellowtail is better than salmon because the prices I am finding are not backing that statement up? How do they commercially fish for Yellowtail? longline?

My "guess" as to why Yellowtail cost less than Salmon is: I believe most of the Yellowtail is caught in Mexico by panga fishermen using hand lines. The fishermen make next to nothing for Yellowtail per pound compared to what it cost USA and Canadian companies to farm raise Salmon. Not sure what the Mexican fishermen get today for Yellowtail however, last I remember (keep in mind I have CRS) it was around 10-20 cents per pound, but my info is out of date and this price probably has changed.

Out of pocket... $4000'ish.

Yellowtail is a Jack (as stated above) and is a very mild fish. The loins can be cut into Hamachi (sushi) and are exceptional. Yellowtail tastes like whatever you put on it.

Salmon is more oily (IMHO) and I only like it raw. Personal preference.

You want to go 10-17 day right off the bat? Personally I would recommend an 8 day first to get a taste of all the LR experience has to offer. On a 10-17 day trip you'll be driving for 4-8 of those days and you might not stop at Cedros or Benitos. Which is okay but I think everyone should have that opportunity at least once as well as hitting the Lupe.

Good luck.

Okay....so thats kind of what Arvin said too...Get into a 5 or 8 day first (get your feet wet) and get the experience, then go on a 10-17. I know this a question for the LR board but since we are already talking about it...do different boats go different places on an 8 day? how far can you go? do some boats travel for 4 days total and fish 4 days total and others travel for 2 days total and fish 6 days total? how does that work? What kind of fish and size of fish can a guy expect on an 8 day? I would love to get into some YFTs.

Tommy,

You dont go to the motorcycle store and buy a 1300 CC race bike before you even know how to ride, its not a good idea to hop on a 18 day right off the bat either. there is a lot more than knowing how to fish that goes into enjoying a trip like that. It may be a 100 foot boat, but its gets pretty small after about 12 days, and the last 3-4 days of doing nothing but driving makes everyone kinda antsy and irritable.
Hop on a 5 or 8 day, even our 8 day next june, and get a good idea of what its all about first. our june 8 day fished 7 out of 8 days in 06 and 6 out of 8 days in 07, you get the most bang for your buck, and the best variety fishing. Yellows, wahoo, bluefin, yellowfin, albacore, white seabass, calicos, halibutt, dorado even the occasional big eye, thresher or mako and all the ground fish you can shake a stick at, its a great expereince. Rarely a trip like that will even get into the giant bluefin over 100 or 200.
if youre ready to pull the trigger we have a spot left on our 8 day jun 19th, and we'll loan you all the gear you could ever want so you can get an idea of what you like before you throw down a bunch of skrilla on LR equipment.
hop on, it'll be a blast.
