I brought another reel for you to use to cast bait. Its the old version of the Daiwa Sealine (the SL30SH). It doesn't have as good freespool as the new "X" models, but has a light graphite spool and can easily handle 30# line. Its perfect for 25# and will work with 30#.
I can even bring back some jigs I don't care much for and you can definitely crank surface iron with this reel. It would pair okay with one of those rods you had, I think. You can try the Torium as well, of course, but this will give you a feel for the Sealines and we can both cast jigs to boiling fish. | You wouldn't even try my salmon, but you "know" that its better than Yellowtail. You better catch all the Yellowtail and whatever else is down there that you can so i can try that chit. I'll pay for an extra box if that is your concern. What is your daily limit? Where exactly will you guys be fishing? So what does Yellowtail taste like and how do you prepare it? Would you say it is like halibut or what would you compare it to?
I want to get into this long range stuff so show me the way. I don't know a whole lot about casting 2 oz. iron but am willing to learn. I just know that you can hit my neighbors house over 60 yards away with a 2 oz lead. It's not like we surface cast to salmon or halibut so I will need to learn/train to get the most of an SD LR trip.

My favorite method is to take a small gutted Yellowtail and BBQ it whole with the stomach filled with vegies and some butter, all wrapped inside of aluminum foil.. When done, peel the skin back and make fish tacos.. YUM!!! An added bonus, no dishes or pots and pans to clean up, just BBQ and eat...
Not sure how to describe the taste, a cross between tuna and halibut, but a lot like Yellowtail..

Dos Locos with a NICE surface iron Yellowtail... That's 30# right there and fun as hell to pull on with kelp and rocks around.
This is what happens when the wind and surface iron interact and you're not paying attention.
A dropper loop Yellowtail at the Lupe. Keep in mind that Ron is a huge man and that pig went 57#
A little by catch at Isla Cedros, a 50# + White Sea Bass, some of the best eating critter out there. Way to go Mikey whos is not a small man either.
Yours truly (I'm six/three and 250#) on a different trip but if you want to go Long Range then you have to be ready to tackle the cows... Moo Bitches!
You should go on a SD trip. 8 or 5 day trips are great and seeing Guadalupe, Cedros, and Alijos Rocks is something that one should not miss as a fisherman.
We're looking forward to taking Arvin with us and having a good time. Maybe the weather will come up and we'll sit at Cedros/Benitos the whole time. The Crocs won't come back and the JD Lamp will be lit.
Ten foot rods rule.

Ok you bastards, I'll keep the Crocs off the boat. I'll bust out Armenian style and role in Adidas flip-flops with white socks.
Corb, I don't care about those fags, I just want to slip a 30# yellow in your pocket!
CF, yellowtail is just fucking good. Plain and simple. Its a bit more gamey than other fish, but not too tough or nasty. I like to just straight throw it on the grill or throw it in a pan with just butter or just olive oil. Nothing fancy needed. It ain't so much the money, just the hassle of bringing it up. You friggin' stress guys just throwing around all you overtime dollars... Like I said, I'll work on it. If not, there's a decent (at least for Seattle) sushi place in Ballard that has good yellowtail sashimi and hand roles.
If you want in on LR, I don't exactly know much, as I haven't done it more than once, and I don't have any gear bigger than 40#. Personally I think you should just jump on an 8 day next year. Get a decent 30# outfit and a decent 40# outfit, then bring your heavier stuff and get some pointers from everyone on how to rig up and what to buy for the next time and go from there.
There's a big difference between chasing yellows and chasing cow tuna. Cow tuna isn't something you just walk up and do (except in the Fall of 2005 or 6 or whenever it was...). But you can get into the 100# fish pretty easy. I got nothing for you there, as I don't do it, and am not really as interested in it. I'll take a day fishing yellows on the surface over 100#, 200#, 300# tuna any day! If we end up sitting at Cedros the whole trip, I will be a very happy man. But I would love to see the other spots as well. But, man, Cedros was amazing last year.
As for fishing the jigs and throwing bait on lighter line (=< 40#) I can help you out. Don't expect to just start killing fish on the jig, as it takes a lot of practice and a whole lot of patience and focus. And its hard for a newbie jig fisherman to stand on the bow and make cast after cast with no love when the fishing is wide open on bait in the stern. But even the bait fishing will be a blast for you. Its not like what you've described that you guys do up here.
If you really want to learn casting, I'll get you this Sealine I brought up. Load it up with 25# or 30# and start practicing in your backyard. I'll give you some fundamental guidelines for form and then its all muscle memory. After that, we go out this summer and you put it to use on both casting baits and jigs and plastics. Then you can see how you like it and if you want to start getting really serious about a LR trip. And when I head home for holidays in the winter I can come back with rods for you if you want. A factory wrap will be instant, and a custom wrap will just require a bit more notice (and will be almost, if not the same price). And you can always search through archives on here or post up questions.
Sound like a plan? Let's get serious and make this happen for you. Things are hectic right now, but we'll get together soon and I'll put together a Master Phasing Plan for you. We'll make it happen...

You're on it... I wasn't trying to dissuade anyone just making sure that they knew what to expect.
You show up with the 30 and 40 gear and we'll hook you up with the rest and the long rods.
Is it June yet?

That's funny....Yellowtail costs less than salmon....but you're all saying that Yellowtail is better than salmon...hmmmm http://www.catalinaop.com/Fresh_Yellowtail_p/fish_g1.htm
Is this the right kind of Yellowtail in the link? or is that something else? I just did a search for "Yellowtail fish prices" and found this link so sorry if it is not representative of reality, but I notice that farm raised.....YEA FARM RAISED salmon...is $12.00 a lb. while Yellowtail is $7.50. They are predicting that WILD KING SALMON will go for $40 a lb. this spring/summer. Anybody care to explain to me why Yellowtail is better than salmon because the prices I am finding are not backing that statement up? How do they commercially fish for Yellowtail? longline?
When you say Yellowtail is gamey...you mean fishy. Salmon is NEVER fishy. Salmon is good, but halibut is probably the best eating fish out there.
ARVIN - DUMMY - I'll pick you up from the airport and help you get that box of fish to my house. No worries....ha ha. What are you worried about....get a freakin handcart...grow a pair... and bring your 5 boxes of fish back. I'll even let you store the fish in one of my six freezers. I remember when we went on a 3 day trip to Sitka, AK and brought back 470 lbs. of filleted salmon, halibut, and lingcod...thats 7 boxes. MAN UP! Don't know why you cali. guys whine so much. Shit I hope Arvin is a departure from the norm. Please tell me there is hope down there in SD! JK Arvin....hope I didn't hurt your feelings. He's really sensitive guys....be easy...ha ha ha. Let him wear his crocs and parade around....representing Frisco as he would. :Pillow _Fi

Now why is chasin cow tuna "just not something you can walk up and do"? Are you talkin' gear? fish fighting skillz? available fish? what? I want to get to that level so tell me what I need to do. Shit, honestly...I would be stoked about a 100# tuna. I have never caught a Yellow Fin Tuna period. Just never had the chance to.
I'm all about learning so teach me the way, JEDI MASTER. I have 5K waiting to be used on a LR trip and cashflow to grow my arsenal. Overtime has been ok and you know whats important to me....CHASIN TAIL! Too bad we don't get paid time and a half.
