MA7 with no downriggers

So the bride and I are either climbing Mt Adams or headed to Sucia island for a wood boat group's big party of the summer. I might actually be able to get some time in fishing, but the current boat doesn't have downriggers, or a place to put one.

Anyone have any legitimate ways to at least get a shot at catching our fine fin-clipped friends in 7? Im set up for the shallow water fishery at B10 with divers and such, but I know they like to stay between 90' and 115' in the islands.

Here is how she's set up:

Its laid out for lake fishing for warmwater lake fishing of spiny rays and the occasional trout.

Any info is appreciated, otherwise Ill just put a pound of banana weights on the line and hope like hell I get lucky.

Nice clean setup. With any luck you will have it covered in blood and scales! I used to do just fine with divers, now have downriggers so I don't use them but I would try banana weights and divers. We caught a 28lber this weekend with a 1oz weight, and a 20lber 3ft down on the downrigger.
Good luck.

I'd use 1# balls and an inline ball release..I frequently use this rig when fishing three rods..two on the riggers and one on the ball. You'll sacrifice the ball but what the hell. That will get you down 75 feet or deeper on a slow troll.

I've had great success on divers in Canada, but not so in the San Juan's.

Motor Mooch.

-Rig with 4-6 oz banana sinkers aka mooching leads. 6ft mooching leaders and cutplug herring

-hope the barkshark are not prevelent.

-From a drift, strip out one rod 50 pulls, the other other 30pulls. Set in those rodholders you got back there.

-(since it doesn't look like you have a kicker) Bump the main motor into gear untill your 90degree line angles go up to 30degrees keeping an eye out for DR fisherman approaching your stern.

-Pull main out of gear letting you line angle fall back to near 90 degrees, and repeat.

-Bump, neutral. Bump, neutral. Bump, neutral. Bump, neutral. Bump, neutral. And wait for the rod to fold.

You covering water and feeding chinook love a cutplug. The question I'd ask the guys fishing herring up there like Ronzob it what size herring. Green? Purple? If the fish are there, it's a very effective presentation. And unlike B10 with delta divers where the fish are primarily at one depth, motor mooching allows you to cover the water column and get that deadly falling spin.

Depending how slow you can idle that F50, you can get down to 90ft with a 12oz orange banana weight and cut plug just off the bottom. Use braid for main line. 6ft leaders.
Say no more.

Thanks J.D. I've never read a "How To" on motor mooching before. I'm going to have to try that sometime. The wife likes the idea of holding the fishing pole, she thinks downrigging is boring. Imagine that?

If you don't want to drill anymore extra holes in your boat for downriggers, then it's motor moochin' for you. But wait........if you add a another rod holder foward of the ones that are there. You can run a heavy rod (halibut) and rig it up as a 2# maybe 3# downrigger w/ a release clip. Of course the heavy reel will already have some 65# Spectra--you can use it, but if you top shot that with 20# Spectra--it cuts the water even further and keeps the line angles low while increasing troll speeds. You can't run flashers with this setup, but a Fish Flash can help get a nookie's attention. Troll/Drift/Motor Mooch a cutplug and try to keep your line angles less than 45 degrees.

I successfully used this setup at Lake Chelan for Macks down to 200'....this was before I "drilled the extra holes".

Good Luck,
BuckFly

I have to agree...it is boring. If you use downriggers, you're missing out on the best part of the whole Salmon Fishing Experience....it's the Strike.

......tap......tap......TUG....(Set hook)...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!
