Like TT said, the only bait you will get is frozen herring or frozen anchovies, You might want to try coyote spoons or coho killers,UV white lightning or purple haze colors. these knock the crap out of the kings and coho. They are expecting a run of about 5 million humpys (pinks) in the puget sound this summer. Those dates are a great time to be here fishing.YOU WILL CATCH FISH!!!!!

is bait expensive up there? and do you need to have a downrigger (which we really dont use down here) or can you just use a heavy weight. I keep looking online for how to information but keep getting salmon recipies.

Coronet Bay Store is at the marina where you can moor your boat after launching it if you want to leave it in the water for your time there. I bought some herring for $5.50 for a dozen and they have anchovies too for the same. they have gas and there is also a store back on the main highway 100 yards or so north.
Your kids will get a kick out of looking down at the water from the bridge too, It looks bad from up high with all of the whirlpools and boiling water. Your boat will have no problem getting through it.

so you can catch smelt and herring close to shore? thats cool it will give then something to put into the bait tank.
what works better, herring? anchovies? sardines? because at the prices you are talking about i could get that down here and bring it up for less then 1/4 of that cost.
do they also hit off plastics?

You can catch herring off the docks in front of the boat ramp in Cornet bay using the sabiki bait rigs, also lots of time when you are in the islands they can also be jigged up around some of the edge of kelp beds or rip lines. If you are going to cast for the pink salmon (humpies), a small pink hootchie slid over a small leadhead jig works well.
The humpies don't run real deep, so you could troll for them using a small pink hootchie 12-14" behind a small white or chrome dodger and then about 3 feet to a 4oz banana weight. Troll slow.
Or pink buzz bombs are also popular. Just a reminder that when fishing for salmon, even with a buzz bomb, you must use single barbless hooks - a siwash hook works well.
Have fun up there!!

It's been barbless for salmon in Puget Sound and the San Juans (area 7) quite a few years now.
From the regs: Hook and line angling - Unless noted differently, only one line with up to 2 hooks isallowed. Barbless hooks are required for all species in Marine Areas 5-13, except forage fish jig gear. When fishing for SALMON in Marine Areas 1-13, only single-point hooks may be used. |
