Try dropping bait like whole herring to the bottom in 250-400 feet of water and 2-3 lbs of lead with a dropper loop and you will understand! Major fouled gear!!!

Try it in 500ft of water and get back to me.
If fishn shallow I think it would work fine.

Toss the spreader bar in the recycle bin, learn to put your bait on properly and this is a non issue, even at 75-100 fa.

I'm also curious on this spreader bar contraption. Granted, I've only caught 4 'butt and they were on guide boats out of Ninilchick, AK, There were no spreader bar things in use there, only a heavy 3-way, 4lb lead ball, and what looked like parachute cord to the hook. We were in 250ft and didn't have issues with tangles. We were, however instructed to lower the baits at a controlled rate because freespooling would cause a tangle down below.
Since I will be hitting the butt hard (no not ) next season, I'd like to learn what works around here.

How do you rig the bait properly for 100 fathom?
I know that out at the Canyon we don't use spreader bars and fish as deep as 130 fathom
I prefer using spreader bars in the straits as I some times use Spinners/Hootchie/Hog Herring/plastic grub and at depth keeps it from being a tangled mess.

Dropper loops work if you rig them right. John Colman makes some good dropper rigs if you don't want to rig your own. He doesn't have them on his website, but give him a call and I'm sure he could put something together: Squid Jigs - Martinetti Squid Jigs at the Squid Jig Warehouse He is local (lives in Auburn) and a great guy to deal with.
The key to dropper loops is that you have to rig them so that the dropper lines extend orthoganlly from the main line. This can be accomplished a couple ways, but using heavy line is a must. You can tie a dropper loop knot OR you can crimp mono in such a way (and I'm not talking one crimp holding the dropper line to main line) that it holds the lure away from the main line.
If I get really bored maybe I'll post a tutorial. Actually, there may already be something out there. I haven't looked.
