TRUCK UPDATE

I will be buying a new truck at some point within the next year. I may be buying this truck from out of state, depending on what kind of deal I can get.

I know that Washington has this cute tax they like to place on vehicles coming into Washington, called the "USE TAX"

WA State Licensing: Use tax

It is like a sales tax except that they base it off of the "fair market value" as opposed to the "purchase price" of the vehicle. Basically, it allows this tree hugger state to tax you more than what you bought the vehicle for, because you know that I will find a better deal than "fair market value". Thanks for screwing me again Washington.....

However, it is not blatantly clear to me whether or not I have to pay the full "use tax" even if I have payed out of state sales tax. Oregon is obvious. There is no sales tax so if I bought a truck there, I would automatically pay the full "use tax" in Washington. But if I bought the truck from Idaho, I am assuming I would pay sales tax. So the question is...

DO I HAVE TO PAY THE FULL "USE TAX" FOR WASHINGTON STATE EVEN IF I PAID IDAHO STATE SALES TAX, OR DO I JUST PAY THE DIFFERENCE?

I am looking at buying a 2008 Dodge Ram 3500 Quad Cab SLT Diesel (6.7L Cummins). Do you guys have any feedback on truck choices? They would be greatly appreciated.

Also if you guys have any recommendations on dealerships or where to buy....please let me know.

I need a bigger truck to pull the bigger boat that I will be getting....

THanks fellas

TIGHT LINES

You won't pay out of state sales tax. You will pay tax when you go to transfer the title into your name and lisc. the vehicle in your home state (WA).

You have to pay Washington state sales tax and Licence fees just like buying in Washington, Dave Smith has a $200.00 prep fee you do not have to pay Idaho sales tax if licencing in Washington

Putting a Dodge Mega Cab pickup into perspective is like looking at other trucks through the wrong end of a telescope. When a pickup is built to carry six adults any time you need, it's time to thing big about life: Mega Cab offers ample opportunity for versatility and personalized comfort. Rear seats fold down - for either a flat cargo floor, or cargo-carrying capability - and split for 40/60 convenience when loads vary in size and volume. The vast interior of Ram Mega Cab allows amenities that give this pickup the comforts more typically associated with a big rig equipped with a double sleeper. The facts speak for themselves: Extraordinary room offers 15 inches more cab length than the average crew cab. And yes - those rear seats actually recline. Rear seat leg room is balanced by versatility, with built-in trays, and hooks. Closet room ? Look behind the rear seat - you'll find 9.5 cubic feet of storage space.

Word from my father in law is that if you go to Oregon you get hit for the full amount of use tax. WA watches OR registered vehicles and OR mail services (PO boxes) like a hawk. If you go to Idaho and pay the sales tax, WA will hit you for the difference unless you get an ID mail service and a ID drivers license. There is some gray area about how you might get away with not paying the sales tax if you maintain the license and a PO box for a year. PO box might cost you a $150 a year.

My father in law purchased a car in South Dakota, paid a 3% sales tax. He paid $150 for a PO box and picked up a SD license with that PO box. He just explained that he was a RV'r. Now he is back in WA and isn't paying a use tax and is laying off the RV thing for full time steelhead fishing on the Cowlitz.

Speaking of which, what a fucked up fishery that is! I have visited and fished my ass off there and couldn't buy a steelie. There's a magic-bite-detection finger that I definitely don't have. It aint' like throwing 'dines and lures at tuna, yellows, and dorado.

Also if you are a Costco member they have a car buying service they set up a meeting with the dealer. They will show you a cost + price

or you could move to South Dakota and save 6% on your sales tax

WA is a greeeeeedy state. They charge Use Tax on vehicles owned by folks who've moved to WA from OR, when they register the vehicles they already owned.

My dad is the pricinple owner of a small company based in Portland, OR but he lives in Auburn, WA. When the former pricinple (who lived in Portland) passed-away, Dad sold his company vehicle in-favor of keeping the newer one the former principle had. When Dad moved the registration from OR to WA, he was charged sales tax based on the ORIGINAL sales price of the rig, despite the fact that it was two years old with 40-some thousand miles on it. How fucked-up is that?

Bottom line, I think you're going to A) not pay sales tax in ID but pay the full tax in WA or B) Pay the ID tax + the difference in WA. Be careful with the registration in other state via PO box address/drivers license. Registration is supposed in the state of primary use. You may be liable for back-taxes if "found-out." This is why our company trucks are registered in WA, despite the fact the company is based in OR. Our insurance agent and lawyer suggested we not try to make the argument, as it could prove more costly in the long-run.

Good advise frok the Peddler. Dont mess with the Tax Man . I am buying a boat in OR and bringing it to WA and will pay the full WA registration tax. Boats are a little different than cars. I actually hope I can pay more taxes each year. It only means that I am making more money.

Good stuff from Jay above. I kinda like the dual wheel though and will strongly consider a Dodge for my next rig. I had a Dodge a few years ago and can only say good things about it.

I crawled under a one ton extended cab dual wheel Chevy that belongs to Uncle Sam on a break today to check it out. I can't say that I felt that what was under the covers looked as good as what I thought I saw when the lights were on. Maybe I'm just used to looking at the suspension of HUMMVs.

There has been some discussion on this board about diesels and I think that without a doubt, my next rig will be a diesel. More money up front, but in the long run, I think will pay for itself as I have no problems keeping a vehicle for a long time (Although I "need" a new, bigger boat NOW.)

New or used? I usually buy new but bought a used Ford truck once. Not another Ford again. Thought it was a good deal with less than twenty thousand miles on it. Put in a new engine after fifty thousand miles. That one went bad thirty thousand miles later. It sucked to be me. I'll never buy another Ford. (Fix Or Repair Daily) Fool me once shame on you...fool me twice...

However, I would buy used Chevy or Dodge after seriously checking it out to include a VIN check. The VIN on my Ford from Parr Ford in Bremerton came back to another truck. Too bad I waited until the need for a third engine to check this out. Live and learn.

Used dual wheel truck, cab over camper and big boat. A reel fishing package.
