Limits of large Spot prawns from Hood Canal 6/11/08

Nice limits of Hood Canal Shrimp came to the boat w/ a number of oysters off the beach for breakfast. Now that schools out and baseball seasons are over I hope they gives another day!

Boys with the first score of the day....We tried deep on false reports for nothing, then back into the normal stock depths and started crushing them.

Dad and the last trap of the day on a short soak.

I sure hope we get another day.....The fish checker said there was no pressure and should have quota left over but due to lack of man power they probably can't open for another day! She went on to say that the Indians have been very patient waiting for us to catch our quota and need to get a chance.....I call BS! We should get ours no matter what. They've got the rest of the year, and since when did they wait to fish or kill anything. I can't believe the sympathy the WDFW gives them.

Anyway enough w/ the rant, it was a great day and momma took care of daddy for taking the kids out for a day they won't soon forget.

Nice report.... I remember trips like that as a kid. memories that I will never forget and can't wait share them with my children. It looks like you have 3 lifelong fishing buddies.

Growing up my dad did everything for the three of us, preping the boat, driving, tieing all the gear and untangling lines, to cleaning the fish and boat then driving home. I don't know how he did all of that... he says he would not trade it for the world...

now I pick him up, he just gets in the truck, then in the boat then i drop him off at home with his fish he did not have to clean and he watches a dirty drive off he does not have to clean.....

Few more years and you get to sit back and enjoy

I remember trips with my dad as-well, good times! Fortunately we still get to do things like that together. Someday, we'll be able to take some "3 generation" trips. Posts like this make me wonder if it's time my wife and I should consider starting a family.

Ah yes,

I remember those days. The first weekend was always mama, myself and both the kids.

The second weekend was my buddy, myself and the kids. It was always a good time. OK, sometimes the weather was crappy, but the shrimp more than made up for that.

Back then, the limit was 10 pounds of whole shrimp per person. Then it was cut to 7 pounds whole per person- still a passle of shrimp.

The 80 each thing kind of put a super damper on our shrimp outings. Then the kids grew up and didn't really want to hang with Dad all day on the water. Then I sold my old 17 Whaler and bought a 22 Whaler and haven't rerigged the pulling gear on the new to me boat.

T, how do you like the puller rigged on the Scotty mounts? My pots are framed with #4 rebar and weigh 25 pounds a piece empty. Do you think the Scotty rail mounts are tough enough for that heavy of pot?

Great report,
Doug

Doug,

It works awesome off the Scotty's mounts...If you see in the one photo the cutting board (blocks the the puller), there's a wood mount ( Scotty has a mold in the mount for this) I placed for outboard support on the gunwale. I also did another one on the inside and through bolted to 2 support boards together. It is solid. My pots have 24# of lead + trap weight, so we're pulling the same weight and I don't have a problem. I'm OK pulling 75LBS, not an issue.

T,

I use Scotty rail mounts on my 22 for my Scotty electric downriggers.

If you have a little spare time, could you post a detail picture of your puller and Scotty mount? I like how your description sounds. And if the wheel has already been invented, why try to invent it again?

Nice job - hope to get my little guy out there soon. He's two and still a bit freaked out in the boat - that will change soon enough.

I hit Elliott Bay on Saturday - did OK got 40 nice sized shrimp. Lots of good people out there - no hassels, no BS. Everyone took home shirmp.

Great going - see you out there sometime.
