Jackson Hole, WY

Going to Jackson Hole, Wyoming next week for a family vacation. My wife's cousin has a boat on Jackson Lake, and we'll be spending at least a day on the boat.

I've heard/read about the big lake trout there, but have never fished for them. Can anyone help me out with lures/bait/techniques?

Also, I think we'll be anchored up in a cove most of the afternoon. I'll probably have a line in the water, what species is possible and what should I use while anchored in shallow water?

I can't help you with Jackson Lake but if you are interested in fishing the Snake River between the southern boundary of Yellowstone Park and Jackson lake then PM me and I'll give you some tips - I have spent two weeks every August fishing the streams in that area for the past 10 years.

Also, be sure to work in dinner at Bubba's BBQ in Jackson one night. Its down at the south end by the Orvis store. Be sure to BYOB (totally cool to do this) - everyone else will be jealous watching you sip cold ones with a rack of baby backs when they find out they don't sell their own beer or wine. They'll even bring a bucket of ice to your table for you to ice them down with.

Have never fished the lake personally, just the Snake below Jackson Dam. Town has a number of absolutely first rate fishing shops that can offer up to the minute tips for all the fish-able waters in those parts.

Keep an eye peeled for critters there, they come in 500, 1000 and 2000lb sizes!

Famous newspaper headline in Jackson during baseball season: Bison 2, Tourists 0.

best

This time of year the fish hold deep.. I was in Kalispell MT late August last year on flathead lake fishing for lakers and we used the downrigger bouncing the bottom in 100'+. using large plugs. We caught a couple that morning in the 25-30# range. Most likely the same will hold true in Jackson Hole. Its said that they like 53 degree water so if you can figure out the temps at depths that may help... As will the fish finder.

In that area they tend to pray on smaller trout and have decimated native trout populations in Yellowstone lake. You could also probably have some success trolling and large imitation trout like those from Castaic. If you dont have access to a down rigger, you could use a 3 way swivel with a larger weight on one of the ends of a swivel hanging off a long leader. Then use a 3-4' leader for the lure of your choice. Lead core may also be a good option depending on how deep the fish are.

There is also good trout fishing just below the damn where jackson spills into the snake.

Jenny lake is not far from there as is another lake right next to Jenny. If you make it to yellowstone, try to find your way towards the east entrance and hike to trout lake... If you have a fly rod, try some bead head nymphs as well as the hatch!

Good luck and post a report!
