TUNA CHALLENGE 2009

On Thursday evening, August 27, the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge Tournament will host its 8th Annual TUNA SEMINAR, at Silver Gate Yacht Club on Shelter Island, San Diego. This annual event is a great opportunity for Tournament Anglers to learn about the latest techniques and equipment available for catching Tuna. It is Free and we invite all interested Anglers whether they are fishing in the Tuna Challenge Tournament or not, to come and participate. Every person in attendance will receive a free ticket to participate in a special raffle at this seminar.

This special seminar is open to the public and affords anglers the opportunity to hear from experts in sportfishing related activities. Tournament registration begins at 4PM followed by fish tacos, and an open bar (no host) at 5:00PM. This is a great seminar to attend if you are looking for extra crew members or a boat to participate in the tournament on.

The Tuna Seminar takes place from 7-9 P.M. and we are happy to welcome two very knowledgeable tuna experts in Southern California Fishing, who will demonstrate the many different ways to fish for and catch tuna from small and large private boats. Our Special experts are: John Donovan with RedRum Charters and Captain Robb, a local San Diego Charter Boat Captain.

John Donovan, who currently resides in San Marcos and Cabo, is the 2008 winner of the Western Outdoor News Tuna Tournament aboard its 28' Californian ReelRum. It was the first time the company placed first in the tournament; the same team won third place in this tournament in 2006. RedRum charters in Cabo is the premier charter with a fleet of 6 boats and very knowledgeable captains and crew. John brings his vast knowledge of fishing tuna to our seminar and is willing to share some of his secrets for finding and landing large tuna in our So. Cal. waters.

Captain Robb is a veteran of our waters and has been fishing them since he was 14 years old. His history includes commercial fishing, jig boat, and plank boat along with private captain for a number of yachts. He currently is the captain for a 60 foot Mickelson and averages over 800 hours a year fishing for tuna.

Both captains also represent and support Ballyhood lures. They are very happy to share their unique fishing tricks and techniques for catching trophy fish. Some topics to be discussed include types of lures, lure materials, colors, spreads, depth, line, fluorocarbon, spreader bars, placements, speed, size, and deployment. There will be some "myths" discussed and maybe dispelled during this seminar.

Also included is a special update from BloodyDecks.com and Fishdope.com. They will provide the latest info on what’s hot, where the fish are, what’s working.

There’s lots of information to be shared by the experts as well as meet with all of the other great So Cal fishermen.

Just quick reminder that the seminar is tonight. Come on by and hang out others on the board. Eat some fish tacos and drink some beer.... and maybe learn some new tricks. AND...don't forget the free raffle prizes.

Hope to see lots of people there!

Went down and checked it out, great info was had. Thanks to Ali and Jason for the Fishdope presentation, that is an excellent tool for anyone with their own boat, which I don't have. Overall I learned quite a bit and got to enjoy Yellowtail Pale Ale for 2.25 a glass, can't beat that!

First, thanks to you and your cousin for showing up. We had a great turnout and had two completely opposite views on how to troll for fish. We had lot's of prizes to give away.

I'm sorry you think I pulled a bait and switch, cause that is never our intension. What I did was announce again what the grand prize was going to be and then kept going with the raffle. I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding. I've asked around from other people in the audience just in case I did something wrong, but so far everyone I've spoken to says it was OK.

Thanks again for supporting the Make-A-Wish Tuna Challenge and hopefully you enjoyed the dinner, company of other fishermen, and the speakers.
