Don't forget! The Beyond The Breakwater
2009 TYD Tournament is scheduled for August 8, 2009. Registration deadline is midnight, July 31. There have been a few changes since my earlier post, please see below...
This event is a
fly-fishing only, "Limited Take" tournament focused on Tuna, Yellowtail, and Dorado (the T-Y-D). The event is one day only, and will be based out of Dana Landing Market on Mission Bay.
Prizes include: trophies; saltwater fly-fishing tackle from Abel Reels, Scientific Anglers, Temple Fork Outfitters, Cam Sigler, and Sea Level Fly fishing; sunglasses provided by Oakley and Smith; Rio products provided by Outdoor Specialty Products; gift certificates; ARC Dehookers; boating accessories from West Marine; and a SPOT Satellite Messenger.
The Grand Prize is an Abel Super 11 fly reel in their Dorado fish graphic finish (MSRP of $1,050). The reel will be awarded by random drawing among all the contestants, so you don't even have to place in order to get a chance at winning this reel!
There will also be a special raffle for a bluewater fly fishing outfit, consisting of a Temple Fork Outfitters Bluewater MD fly rod, Terry Hayden #3 fly reel, and Scientific Anglers Deepwater Express shooting taper and Sharkskin shooting line.
This is a team event. Each boat entered is considered a team, and must pay an entry fee of $150 for 1-2 members, $50 / member after that. Unlike the 3Bs Tournament, there is NO handicap if you use a guide or have someone else drive the boat / fish (they just can't fish with fly tackle).
The entry fee includes a barbecue dinner from Phil's after fishing, tournament Tee-shirt, Beyond The Breakwater hat and a gift bag.
We also have worked out some deals for contestants:
- If you are coming from out of town, we have discounted rooms available for Friday night at The Dana on Mission Bay, which is located right next to the ramp (so you can park your boat/tow vehicle there).
- We also have some discounted rooms available for Friday night at the Doubletree Hotel in Del Mar (the parking lot can accomodate boats on trailers, no height restrictions). This hotel is about 15 minutes north of the ramp, but is about $30 cheaper.

Fishdope.com is providing a week of free service to registered contestants prior to the event. This is a new site with integrated fish reports, SST maps, etc.
For the 3Bs Tournament, we held 4 skills seminars in June. If anyone if interested in a TYD seminar in the San Diego Area in late July, please e-mail me at:
editor@btbff.com. If we can get 8-10 attendees for the seminar, we'll set one up. I am thinking of July 29, the last Wednesday before the reistration deadline.
