In my humble opinion private boaters account for a very small percentage of the Threshers killed.

What about the gill nets some 3 miles off and farther? What about the gill net boats?

I have seen gill net boats hovering at 3 miles off(their legal limit to wrap) and wait for dark and then move in an start the wrap. Have seen that twice.
Yes I called F & G. Results?

Private boaters hang their Threshers at the dock and proudly take pictures for the world to see and are not thinking that a lot of the world will look at that picture with disgust. A lot of these people would like to shut down the private boaters and are not concerned with the commercials. Have you ever seen a commercial guy hang his thresher and take pics and publish them on the internet?

By the way I am convinced the commercial guys listen to VHF ch 72 for the private boaters to brag where they are getting them and then move in, including inside 3 miles and wrap them all up and they are gone.

Lets turn this constructive.

The NOAA/Southwest Fisheries Science Center representative at the weigh in said they would be happy to do a seminar on Thresher conservationn and go over the ways to release them including mouth-hooking techniques, slow trolling live baits, chumming/chunking, benefits of mouth hooking, use of circle hooks not J hooks, handling your catch and how to revive exhausted threshers before release.

BAC has a big beautiful room upstairs. I will buy the coffee and donuts, the tackle shop across the harbor can show and sell the gear, guys can donate things for a raffle. Could even charge $10 and donate the money to SWFSC. The number is 1-760-721-2178 for PIER institute in Occeanside or 1-858-546-7000 for Southwest Fisheries Science Center(NOAA) in La Jolla.

After the seminar how about BAC or Oceanside putting on a tournament that allows only catch and release and only this circle hook method. Would not that be great publicity that shows a serious effort at conservation?

What do you think?

Capt Hal
This is much better talk right here, and the way it should be.

Hal,

Thanks for taking on the tourney in chris' absence. Team unforgiven certainly appreciates your time and effort making this happen.

Bill, male or female still is not right of the Balboa angling club to be hanging endorsing promoting the kill of what you call endangered species. How could you condone this killing vs a responsible well run tournament that promotes catch and release whereby the BAC is encouraging club records world records and stipid buttons for killing a fish on light line tackle. Thanks Bill, will send you a PM .

Hal, I know myself my crew and others strongly condem the BAC , its rules on light line fishing so having thisseminar at the BAC club would not get us to go there since we do not support or condone their club methods and rules which as you , Chris and David know goes against all scientific eveidence "Light line tackle and long fight times kills both sharks and marlin " Just so they can earn a button.

Hal if the NMFS or pier or Scripts are this concerned have them conduct a seminar put it on to educate the BAC, Decker and JD of this. JD should not be selling shark killing equipment , should be promoting circle hooks techniques on how to mouth hook them bait them.

Maybe Chris and Brackmann could do a seminar with the Piers or NMFS or scientists on how to mouth hook live bait threshers since I know both Chris and Dave have done so before and have probably some of the best knowledge and skills live baiting using circle hooks.

Hal again thanks for the offers but if you do seminar a neutral venue one NOT supported by JD and his killers or the BAC club I think you would get a lot more participants. I would even assist if it had nothing to do with JD and the BAC .

Mouth hooking threshers comes down to discipline. There have been so many tutorials on how to mouth-hook a T that if you were not paying attention it shows your concern on the matter.I find it hard to believe that 16 boats were fishing with circle hooks in this tourney,I know for a fact they were not.People try to do whatever is the easiest way to make it happen,it is human nature. This thread is pointless and needs to be closed.

Just one more thing. I DO NOT represent the BAC. I was only speaking for myself and hope you all have a great fishing season. Bill

Nobody said we fished with circle hooks. The format is based on releases and an option if somebody wanted to keep a fish legally.

Like Hal said if you use heavy tackle which most do they bring the fish in quickly and release them. Heavy tackle heavy line and quick fight times is a healthy release.

Yes a in a perfect world circle hooks are the way to go one step at a time.

Sheesh, give it a friggin' break! If you don't like the thread...don't read it. Personally, I think this needs to be discussed...just leave out the personal attacks.

Most of us are aware of how valuable our Tshark fishery is and we're working to sustain it. But, it takes time and discussion. Like I said, if you don't like the thread...

Actually this thread has been productive and a learning point. We can all learn from this.

Funny you did not fish the event and wish this to be closed when its a hot topic on how we can improve and better protect and educate our rec anglers.

The tournament did not require the use of circle hooks since many and most dont have the experience yet.

Personally this thread has led to some interesting e-mails and information which im sure we can share with Chris and hal and make a better event.
