venice report

hey guys, my first report. sorry it's late but i had to learn how to do it. hopefully many more to come. went to venice second week of june with two firemen buddies and jeff in his 27 latitude shallowsport. one bad day of seas and then a week of 1 to 3 footers. our first time and we were dreaming of tuna. found no tuna. caught several nice dolphin on the rip that appeared everyday at around 300 ft. it would move offshore all day and we would follow it trolling ballyhoo. managed some small wahoo and one 60 lb.er. found snapper when we looked, and one keeper aj. tried for large aj and ended up with three in the rig and one broken hook. maybe next time. highlight of trip was when we overnighted at a floater out of south pass, don't know the name. no tuna for us so we had a big hardtail and a glowstick 200 ft. down on the downrigger. fought a large strike for 2 hours at 2 in the morning. finally got color, was mako shark around 81/2 ft. 350ish lbs. pictures dont do it justice.had him at the boat for several passes trying to figure out what to do when he released himself from the 200 lb mono leader. was a great trip, saw manta rays, unidentified pod of really big whales, and some great weather.good luck and good fishing.

Glad you had a great trip and released the Mako. I am sure that was a good pull. Jump?

no jumps, whole fight down and dirty until he came up to chew on the prop for a while. would like to fight one in the daytime that puts on an aerial show for sure.

The only one that I had that DIDN'T jump was a 5' fish that hit a butterfly jig at night. I fought it for about 40 minutes until it finally chafed through the 40# line (no leader). The other 5 that I caught were around 7' and weighed between 205 and 230#. All jumped completely out of the water multiple times. All caught in daylight. Most caught while trolling for billfish with rigged bait.
