Need recommendation on best brand of Wahoo lure

What’s the best brand of Wahoo lure? For texas gulf coast?

Planning on going after some Wahoo soon and I have read a lot of threads on this site and others about Wahoo rigs and lures…

But…. there are so many different brand, models and weights that I don’t know where to start and which to choose.

Some are cheap and some are $50-$60….

I don’t think I will be high speed trolling (since I have only 3/0 tackle)

So 6 to ten knot speeds will be my starting point

If I could get some recommendation on sizes and models of trembler, cedar plugs and trolling lures it sure would help narrowing things down.

Also - is it worth it to buy them pre rigged with wire or better to make up the leaders you’re self?

Re: Need recommendation on best brand of Wahoo lure

Pink, blue mackeral, red head & white body manns strech 30 or rapala; Braid mauder or yozori bonta purple or orange; blue and white ilander or black and red with rigged ballyhoo; I alos like the rainbow colored halaco trembler and strech 30. fish the ilanders on a down rigger or planner or trolling wight if you use a trolling wieght make sure you use a piece of wire tracy on either side (wahoo have been known to hit the wieghts). I would make my own leaders about a foot to foot and a half or smaller singe strand 80# wire connected to small black swival they will hit the swival to if it flashes (wahoo can be pretty leader shy). Fish rigs in water from 150-250 in depth. If I was you I would go down to your local tackle shop or marina and get some good recon before I head off shore to better your chances also you can see what people are fishing in your part of the world (I fish out of AL, LA) and that is what we use. We some times live bait bonita, hardtails, small blackfin and speedo tuna all work well when fished from a down rigger. These baits also tend to produce bigger fish. Also 3/0 reels will get the jod done but I would at least go 4/0 or 6/0. Also try braided line if you are going to fish 3/0 or any reel for that matter Jerry brown line one. Most people are going to tell you should beef up your tackle to 30 and 50 wides which is what I fish but if you are on a budget what you have will work. Pm with any further questions I would be happy to help. Good luck and keep us posted.

Re: Need recommendation on best brand of Wahoo lure

The absolute best wahoo trolling lure I have ever used is called the Hooker Intruder. I do not believe they are being made anymore so they may be tough to find. They track perfectly at a very high rate of speed and never need tuning after landing a fish like the Marauders sometimes do.

They come in several colors but the "Eggplant" color has worked best for me...

Here is a couple of pics...the second one shows the size in relation to a large sized Marauder.

Try plain riging a ballyhoo with an Iland Mistress in black and red. Planers are optional.
