Well I better post something or the board monitor will cancel my priviledges. Hi west coasters. I fish out of Freeport Texas. Red snapper are a big part of the offshore fishing here along with ling (cobia), amberjack, dolphin, and wahoo. The snapper season runs April 21st to Oct 31st. Limit is 4 per person with the minimum size being 16" in federal water (> 9nm offshore). Unfortunately wth the pressure from commercials it is difficult to catch good snapper within 40nm of shore. A typical run is 40-60 nm to find good fish. At 50Nm you are only in 170 foot of water. Sometimes it is tough to get a limit and 16" (minimum size) snapper are kept. The weather in April/May is real snotty and it is hard to get out unless you are in a position to make a run during the week when conditions are right. By June it settles down and you can get offshore usually every other weekend. My son, his friend and I went out last weekend to about 50+nm and made a decent show of it with 3 good snapper in the limit. Its hard to gauge size with the varying photo angles (and the a__ holes that hold a fish at arms length when the photo is taken) .... a pet peave of mine. I'll post the weights of the snapper. Left to right 20#, 12#, 17#. The second picture is a kingfish lip gaffed and release. Catch a lot of them. They make a good run but are not as good to eat as wahoo. The 3rd picture is last year so you could see the mug that made the post. Calm waves and good fishing.
