| Goin' to Texas! What to see? Where to go?
My SWIMPAL and I are going to be going to Texas later this month.
I've been through Texas but always on the way to somewhere else and she's never been there at all.
Our planned route is from California to Denver CO and then South to the Dallas area to visit old friends. From there we want to go down to the South Coast gulf area to check out the fishing and waves. Then we'll head west to check out the Big Bend before heading back towards Cali.
What of Texas should we not miss?
We like open spaces better then cities and want to avoid the real big city areas as much as possible.

won't find much wave action unless there's a hurricane out there somewhere... lots of open places to fish. if you see water, pull over and cast. coastal - san luis ray pass, freeport, matagorda bay, padre island have some good inshore fishing. or charter a boat. lake fork, fayette county reservoir, among other lakes. have fun in the great state of texas, and watch out for jethro...

Big Bend is AWESOME this time of year. Not too hot.
As for the Gulf, the further south you go the prettier the water and sand.
I fish Port Aransas/ Corpus Christi area.
It's not Cali, the Carribean or Hawaii but there are some choice areas
PM if you want more info.

I would get a guide out of Corpus Christi fishing the Laguna Madre, or one of the Baffin Bay guides. The inshore trout and redfishing is phenomenal in October. Also try a surf fishing guide out of Port Aransas for the shark and larger reds. If you like wide open places where you can fish all day and never see another human being, South Texas is it!

Not fishing related, but the best place in Texas is called the "Hill Country". I recommend going to a place called "Garner Springs Park". It is the absolute most awesome place on earth. Also, you are not allowed to say you have eaten BBQ until you go to a place called Coopers in LLano Texas. It will be the highlight of your trip. Can you tell I get homesick from time to time???

Go to Austin if you are into music, cool town too. If you do stop by my restaurant the "Shuck Shack" it is in East Austin. All your beers are on me! South of Austin you have in order going South, The Salt Lick(BBQ), San Marcos(cool little town neat river) Lukebach(sp) (population 12) cold beer and might see some famous rednecks. Also on the coast I think Port A the best it has good beach and good fishing. If you do make it there go to Shorty's and The Back Porch. If you want a beach all to yourself take the jetty boat over to St Joe's Island (20 min) and walk for miles and miles all alone, lots of good shelling. There is so much more but thats all the time I have GOT to go fishin!! The bull Reds are on the beach!

As long as you're in the Big Bend area, make it a point to do the drive
(loop) from Alpine to Fort Davis to Marfa, then back to Alpine. Beautiful country. The McDonald Observatory and the old fort in Fort Davis are both pretty cool and are
along the way. Plan to have lunch or dinner at Borunda's in Marfa. Good old fashion
TexMex.

Don't forget the Marfa Lights, if you're into unexplainable mysteries.
If the BarBQ tour is a priority, my personal statewide favorite is Kreutz's in Lockhart, on 183 So. of Austin.
World's largest (?) natural fed swimming pool is @ Balmorhea out west.
Alpine- small artsy community.
X2 what Rob said about Port A.
