man, there are some decent hotels and condos in Port a --- try www.portaransas.org and go to the places to stay section.. that will lay out most of the condos and hotels.. dont stay at the shark reef its a dump.. the Mcallistair (sp) hotels are nice and convenient. As far as catching trout.. this time a year its hard to tell. I fish mainly offshore but used to spend a lot of time in redfish and aransas bays. try to find you a topspot map.. you might be able to find one online. it will have the bay systems on there. The trout have a hard time resisting a live croaker under a lemon float.. or live shrimp w/ popping cork. Also try packery channel. its on the corpus christi side of Mustang Island(port a). hope that helps you some..

Drive south from Port A. There's only one road that runs that way. Park under the HUGE blue water tower across the street from the condo's. Have waders, an 8 to 12lb bass rod or popping rod. Anything with an extra fast action and between 6 or 7 foot will be fine. A Curado or Calcutta 200 TE would be my reel of choice. Get some chartreuse jig heads in 1/8th, or 3/16 ounce and some pumkinseed and chartruese paddletails... maybe some red and white paddletails, plum and white is good, even black and chartreuse if you go in low light with a moon overhead, some weedless gold spoons, some bone zara spook jr's, or catch 2000 mirrolures. There are some holes in the fence for you can easily get through. Walk west along the fenceline towards the Corpus Chrisit skyline which is across CC Bay from that Blue water tower. it's a well-beaten path. The area is called Shamrock Cove. It's a bit out of the way for boaters but it's low hanging fruit for wadefishing from your rental car. For lure selection, talk to Rocky at Roy's Bait and Tackle off SPID and he'll hook you up with one of each that the locals like. Tell him Kevin, a Navy Helicopter guy sent you. Good luck. I'm envious.... You can also post on Team Oso website and ask for a local guy to take you wadefishing. There would be plenty of guys to roger up for that. Ron Martinez, aka OsoMan would be a good guy to ask.
