Sam Rayburn

Any info on this lake ? It is near Jasper. I am headed there Thursday to hang out with family. We will play golf, kayak, hike etc. I would love to fish a day or two. Any reasonable guides there ? How is the fishing now ? Any tips of what to do, or what to avoid ? Like poisonous snakes, drunk cowboys, etc.
Thanks in advance for any info.

Bass and catfish from shore was what we used to get. Search some of the texas fishing boards thru google

Check out TexasFishingForum.com
the lake is HUGE so depending on which part of the lake your hitting can determine alot. I like fishing around the 103 Bridge, etoile park and Shirley Creek. The swim cove next to the marina at Shirley Creek holds some good shore fish, soak some livers for cats while you pitch spinners around the docks. We've had lots of rain so the water might be more stained than usual, but I still seem to have more luck with natural colors.

Look up HALES TACKLE in Nacogdoches( Appleby Sands). He can point you in the right direction for a guide if you wanna go that route.

Thanks guys. We will be near the south end of the lake. I googled the lake and found the records. I think I will try for a new Alligator Gar record. It stands at 192 pounds. I guess we should keep the smaller grandchildren out of the lake. How bad are the bugs right now ? Skeeters ?

That is what I am thinking. I can't take everything with me and I am taking my golf clubs. A guide with all of the tackle looks like the way to go.

Fished SR back in 1968-9. I was taking some classes at SF Austin U.. Only time I have every had a tick while fishing from a boat. Caught decent bass and a gar that the ladies were not impressed with when they found it in the ice chest.

Sorry for the side track, I can not help you. This thread brought back many fond memories of the area and the good Texas folks.... Hope you have a good time...

Only fished one day. A little from shore and a little from the yacks. Had no idea what we were doing and still caught 5 or 6 different types of fish and one snapping turtle. Everything released.
