15' Daiwa surf rods at Sport Chalet

Has anyone seen or used those huge 15' Daiwa surf rods that some sport chalet's have? I'm not sure if they're discontinued, but they want $59 for them. They're 3 piece spinning rods, btw.

Not much of a market for a 15' rod around So Cal. That's about 9' more than you need for croaker, perch or corbina.

I've seen guys soaking a stringer of 4-5 hooks at quite a few beaches from Dana Point up to Santa Barbara. I'm not sure what they're after, but I see 'em while I'm using more typical methods of going after perch. On one camping trip at Carpenteria (I go there a lot) I got skunked the whole weekend while a couple guys with monster rods and aussie style reels had a bucket of fish.

I also have seen guys on piers use long rods to cast out just behind the surf line with a few hooks. Belmont pier is one place that comes to mind. I know there's not the same market here as other places, but I see it being done. Sure would like to find out more...

If I'm not mistaken the maximum number of hooks allowed is two.

28.65. General.

Except as provided in this article, fin fish may be taken only on hook and line or by hand. Any number of hooks and lines may be used in all ocean waters and bays except:
(a) San Francisco and San Pablo bays between the Golden Gate Bridge and the west Carquinez

Bridge, where only one line with not more than three hooks may be used.
(b) On public piers, no person shall use more than two rods and lines, two hand lines, or two
nets, traps or other appliances used to take crabs.
(c) When rockfish (genus Sebastes) or lingcod (Ophiodon elongatus) are aboard or in possession,
where only one line with not more than two hooks may be used pursuant to Sections 28.55 or 28.27, respectively.

(emphasis mine)
The 2 hook max is for rockfish (groundfish). Sole & Sanddabs are allowed up to 12 #2 hooks.

Those long Rods are good for shore fishing small lakes to get out there, once ya learn how to cast them. I have casted clean across a few with my 15' rod years ago lol

I stand corrected. Thanks for the details.

big poles

The perck king and I use 9' and 11' on the surf just for casting. with rip currents and shore breaks it's almost necessity to have when throwing 4 to 8 oz. just to keep our lines off the beach. thats the way we do it. it works for us.

What 11' rod do you guys use? I've got an old Penn 155 I was thinking about magging and setting up for surf. As you can tell, I don't want to spend a fortune on the setup . I've got a medium sized spinning reel I could use too, which is why I was looking at those big Daiwa rods.
