| Spiny dogfish
alright, i was down at pacifica a week or so ago, and the water was rough as hell after that storm had passed. I was initially there for perch and maybe sand dab or flounder, but with as rough as the bottom was i dont think they were even in the area at the time. However, the spiny dogfish seemed to be hitting like bluegills. Now i did catch a small one, but due to the fact that the ranger there told me they tasted like hell, i opted to throw it back. Now out of personal curiosity i looked the shark up when i got home, and i've read from a couple sources that they are actually pretty tasty when prepared properly(i.e. the fish and chips method). Now due to these conflicting reports i'd like to know if any of you all have had experience in eating these sharks, and if so what was your opinion on the meat?
thanks

I have been waiting for an answer to this question too. I googled recipes for Spiney Ray Dogfish without any real luck. I can catch nice clean 36" SRD easily any day.
I read 80% of the Fish & Chip in Great Britian are SRD.

I've tried it before when I was a kid and caught one down in San Diego. Not bad actually. We'd catch the hell outta em in Alaska but never thought of keeping one up there.

The problem it is my understanding is that sharks urinate thru thier skin
I have heard you need to soak them in milk to draw draw the urine out. The meat is clean and white. Sound like an old wise tale to me!
Until then

easiest way to avoid the ammonia taste in shark meat is actually just to bleed em dry right after catching em.
which actually leads me to another question... have any of you bled a shark before? is it best to cut the artery in the tail or slice their gills to bleed them more efficiently?

All I can say is 20,000 elephants seal can't be wrong. They would rather eat dogfish than f--k. I fact that is exactly how the old time animal trainers at Seaworld would get that mean old Elephant seal back in his cage. They would wave a dog fish at him and he would follow right back to the barn.
