Going to try surf fishing in Carlsbad, staying at the Carlsbad inn ( Dads the manager) and every one wants to have a beach day but id rather fish so im looking to fish artificial baits and i was wondering what pole i should use i have poles basically from 6' to 10' jig sticks what artificials should i use and how should i rig it? thanks alot
You might try Gulp baits carolina rigged with light line (4-6 LB test) and sight fish the corbina and spotfin croaker. If you want to throw lures in the rips try 12 LB test and 1/2 oz. lead heads with a smelt pattern swim bait or 1/2 oz Kastmasters. Stick to the rip currents because that is where you will get most of the fish. The rod and reel set ups should match the line so 5-6' rods (some guys use longer rods) and a small spinning reel for the carolina rigged Gulp baits or sand crabs and 7 1/2' rod and medium spinning or bait casting reel for throwing the lures.
take a few small hooks and split shots and use a sand crab or 3. You'll be surprised at the fish swimming in knee deep water. Super light line 6lb , light drag and small hook. Artificials do work great but sand crabs/worms are the bomb.....oh, look for outgoing current and near jetty structure.
