Yesterday, we found only a single near the harbor, and then picked up half a dozen or so down by the pipe south of the power plant in Carlsbad......
There was also a huge school of Bonita less than a mile straight out from the mouth, and they were smaller than the macs. Might be pretty good billfish bait, if you can keep them alive.....
On our last couple of trips outta O'side we have had some difficulty making the mac's ....the bonies keep getting in the way. We've had our best luck (5-6 pieces) in about 40' of water straight out from the pier. At times we've had to go all the way to the A.N.A. and the seal buoy's outside the Cbad power plant.....using a sabiki. We've spent up to 1 1/2 hours just making em....hate going out with at least 5-6 in the tank. Good Luck.
I was at oceanside pier last knight fishing for Sharks, Landed a 5ft shovel. Tasty..
Anyway the mack's were biting around 7pm. They come in and out but in the evenings there all over the pier.
The other night I was on a twilight out of DP fishing right off the San Clemente Pier and theres was macks everywhere...I mean 1000's of 'em. May I should just make the drive north a bit and fish that pier.
hey, I Fish San Clemente pier all the time man its better than Oceanside. Its not crowded, the parking is good, theres tons of hot tourist chicks everywhere and the bite is good. Right now there bagginf leopards, big sheaphead, the occasional black sea bass and its one of my hoop netting spots in Lobster season.
But for a great bite drive down the coast to coast to Doheney beach and fish from the rocks, its a mix bag party out there.
