| Goleta Beach - August 7, 2007
Figured this was more a surf report than anything else since everything we caught could've easily been reached from the surf...
After a little success yesterday from the surf I took my nephew Kevin from Virginia float tubing at Goleta Beach. Started around 4:00 pm to fish the rising tide. Caught 3 halibut including one legal before I decided to go chase seabass for an hour or so. No seabass but I did hook another legal halibut that bolted just after it surfaced and came un-buttoned. Bryan showed up around 5:30 and got two halibut right away. Me and Kevin joined him for another 4 halibut including Kevin's first at 20 inches. All fish were caught on 3 inch Hammers in the Blue Shad, Pierce's Perch, and Sara's Trout colors retrieved with little short "hops" along the bottom.

Nice. Your smelt color has worked well for me. Thanks again for the boat stickers.

A hammer is a soft plastic swim bait. An artificial lure. Much like the original WormKings that started it all. They come in hundreds of colors and are called Big Hammers. Mainly because of their large paddle tails simulating a mallet or hammer. My uncle is a rep for BigHammer lures. I even had a custom color made to my specifications for baybass'n Newport Harbor. We named it deepbluue! Try this color in the surf and or the bays for especially Spotties and Hali's.

'plastics' and fished from the pier religiously, after many years of catching kelp and bait fish my coworker said I need to give up the pier and head to the surf and pick up some Big Hammers from Mr. Shin in SB. The next day I ditched work and grabbed me a 3'' Glowing Sardine and called up Sea Sucio (david) and hit the surf and BAM BAM BAM! pulling out halis like it aint no thang! David is sprung on the 3'' Pac Chov, so stuck on the BH that he probably has it tatted on his neck!
In any case I have not been back to the pier and fished with anything else but my Big Hammys... Aint no lie! |
