Got to my spot this morning at 6:00. Had no problem getting the perfect bait. Started getting fish about 9:00 and did not stop until 1:00. 30 minute fights from the spotfin where the rule on 4#. Wound up with 7 spotfin (to 7#) 6 corbina to 4# and some BSP. One of the best days surf fishing for me. What a gas!!!!!!!!
Nice Man!! I still have not landed a spot or Corb. Would you give me a clue on location. I live in PB and have seen the bigger kind while surfing. But I never hook up on them.
My friend kept the last batch of fish we caught and had a party. Eveyone seemed to like it just fine. I don't usually keep surf fish because you have to either tow them around with you or bury them under some kelp on the beach. It is more out of inconvenience that I don't usually keep them. Corbina are delicious and I will keep some of them occassionally.
These fish can be caught in rip currents using light (4#) test and short casts with light weights and hooks. Live sand crabs are the best although some are caught on plastics. I got a corbina yesterday while retrieving a plastic swim bait for halibut. I spent about an hour early on for halibut and although I spooked one out of a foot of water I did not catch any on artificials.
The fish in the picture is 24". I did not measure it at the time because I wanted a quick pic and release it. I did measure my hat later and is 12" from the tip of the bill to the back.
If I was in PB I would check out the tides in the paper or on the net and fish south mission. There are some great rips right there.Get there early and be prepared to be displaced by the swimmers by 10:00 or earlier.
