My buddy and i went down to san clemente monday evening to try our hand on some surf halibuts. After going to the local tackle shop she said they were biting on grunion colored swimbaits so we loaded up and off we went. We got to the beach around 4:30 and the waves were crashing I fished while I watched him try to master the art of a baitcaster I was laughing so hard i could hardly fish. After catching two shorts one 20 and 1 about 15 he goes bendo. He asks for my help so i walk over slowly thinking he hooked into the elusive california kelp. Hell no here comes a nice 6pounder cruising up the beach behind him. Great day for only 2 hours of fishing.

just south of the pier i was using 4 inch big hammer grunion colored but i bs'd with the lady at the tackle shop in dana point she says she lives over there and that smelt colored was working also and to work from the pier to seal rock we caught 3 in less than 3 hours not wide open but once we found a spot we had our 3 in 45 minutes they were holding in one spot
