[quote=joshua]my rule of thumb is if i catch a fish i have never caught/tasted b4, i will keep it (if legal) out of curiousity. mark another notch on the bedpost. quote]

Thats what I do too. And even though I liked calicos.. Im done keeping them unless they are floaters or a possible world record.

Re: Release or Eat??

I C&R everthing I hook.
I don't think I'd want to eat anything that comes out of the local waters.

Re: Release or Eat??

C&R for the most part. Legal hali's go straight to the grill and a Leo goes home too if I have the gear to clean him right away. if not he goes back for another day.

Is this a surf fishing thread?

I saw the picture of the swordfish and thought the question related to that.

Nobody mentioned feeling like fish they caught in the surf here in SoCal just might be too dangerous to eat; at least, eat regularly. That's probably my number one reason for the C&R. If I was somewhere more remote and catching fish in the surf I'm sure I'd see my way clear to tasting a few more critters but that's just me maybe.

This is usually how I feel. I did keep my first two Corbina which were both deep hooked and bleeding, one from the southbay which tasted okay, one from Oxnard which tasted alot better, but neither good enough to kill in the future unless bleeding. Never have taken any kind of Surf Perch except one Walleye which was hooked in the gills, and tasted pretty decent, but I release em all now.

A friend of mine really wants to take a Leopard, which he claims taste good, but I have released all of mine (including legals), and fishing with him we never got one over the 36" min.

Bio: I used to live in California (La Jolla and Isleton (that's in the Delta near Sacramento)) and managed to harass all sorts of fish (and crawdads) in both areas. I now live in Baja (Mulegé) and fish regularly out of my 15' Bayrunner.
Release of Eat?

What about a middle ground entry? I do both depending on:
a) the contents of my ice chest
b) how hungry I am
c) the size of the fish
d) whether or not there are any parties coming up

When in doubt... fillet and release!!!

Re: Release or Eat??

I eat what I want from the surf. Which is probably 1-3% of my catch. Cleaning and filleting fish is a chore. And cleaning up after I clean fish is an even bigger chore /bing

Depend's on where your fishing and what your catching.

If I'm on the Big Horn River in Montana, the Henry's Fork in Idaho, it's all release.

If I'm on Twin Lakes and it's all planted fish, I'll keep it and smoke it. Just depends man. Be more specific on what your targeting. Freshwater or Salt ? If its a Butt, I'll keep it unless it's a smaller one (even legal), then release it.

Sorry, I just re-read and saw this was for the surf thing.
