I C&R everything unless I deep hook something and its not going to live. I would be pretty tempted to keep a legal Halibut down here in Carlsbad...but I'd have nowhere to put it and I'd have to go home right away and not fish anymore if I ever caught one
I'll kill damn near anything in the sea except spotties and calicos.. (if it tastes good)
edit- just saw this was for surf fishing...kinda undecided..although BSP don't taste great, there seems to be enough of them that taking a few won't hurt...
C&R all the way though I'd probably be tempted if I caught a legal halibut in the surf (or bay).
Nobody mentioned feeling like fish they caught in the surf here in SoCal just might be too dangerous to eat; at least, eat regularly. That's probably my number one reason for the C&R. If I was somewhere more remote and catching fish in the surf I'm sure I'd see my way clear to tasting a few more critters but that's just me maybe.
most of the local surf we can fish is outright gross a far as water quality goes. i'll pass on the eats but fun to fish. thats also goes for bay and harbor fish as well. it's too bad but true. there is a nasty after taste present in most of these fish when eaten. ever once in a blue moon i'll keep a legal halibut when im desperate but im always reminded why i don't. but no blue water fish will ever see the ocean again till it heads down the shitter!
I usually release everything I catch in the bay or from shore with the
possible exception of the ocasional halibut. They are just too good to pass on. JJ
