| Monkey faced eels The tide was low, the weather was great, the surf was down. All perfect conditions for eel fishing. Poke poling the tidepools of Pigeon Point proved very productive. Three eels and three fish in one hour. The eels are really good eating. Cleaning them is a little tricky - you have to pull the skin off with pliers and it comes off in one piece. Marinate in olive oil and soy sauce and broil. My 9 year old son and I look forward to these kind of days. Fish on... :jigga: fumore :cwmdie: |

ah..........chicken would have to be $130.00 a pound before I would eat a monkey face eel. hey I'm not knocking ya bro, to each his own, but I cant see busting out the tater tots with homeboy. are they greasy? dry, gimme an idea of the taste and consistancy of the meat.
Thanks, tight lines
BTW, do they put up a fight? pull drag? will they hit the surface iron?

They taste like a cross between sculpin and sheepshead.
They're ugly as hell though. And those jaws are super strong. They get most of them north of Santa Barbara. A lot of guys get them on the poke pole in tide pool areas, and others get them fishing close to jetties and inshore rocks and kelp.
They aren't true eels either. They're in the prickleback family, which are loosely related to perch-like fish. Guys call 'em "eels" because that dorsal fin runs the entire length of their body and it gives them a flattened-out appearance.
Those pics make me want to do another NorCal fishing road trip.

Those are some ugly creatures. If I ran into them I'd step on them not think to eat them. Now I'm interested though. Looks like a fun day with the kids. Good for you guys and enjoy eating the ugliest thing since a monkfish.
By the way I don't know whats up with these guys lately but welcome
Looking forward to more reports.
