HELP A BROTHA OUT!!!

I am normally a off the boat fisherman. We get invited out to do some beach camping in San Clemente, or Carlsbad every year for a week. This year is San Clemente State Beach. I have never really fished from the shore and would like some help with set ups, rigs, times, ect... It sounds like those GULP baits are pretty succesfull. I read the Carolina Rig is a hit as well. How do you fish these baits, how much weight , and what distance do you need to cast out to, for some action. Any pointers would be greatly aperciated. The trip isn't untill this summer so I have a while to get some practice in and hit the tackle shop.

There are some good threads on this in this forum. Basically 1/2 to 3/4 oz egg depending on surge...Find a Rip and fish it and any hole you can find. Don't overcast your targets they are in 2-3 feet of water and if the Corbs are around it can be only Ankle deep so look for them first so you dont walk past them.

Re: HELP A BROTHA OUT!!!

i use a cheap light spinning setup with 3/4oz wt on a carolina rig 2 foot leader a small red mesquito hook and a piece of gulp worm or a gulp sand crab. cast to the area just after the wave breaks where the water is still somewhat clear (about 2 or 3 foot of water) as far as time with the tides has proven best but i have caught fish in a slack tide as well

4-6lb I use berkeley Vanish or any flourocarb. More important for Corbina than perch but you never know.

In summer time from the beach you should be able to bet some nice leopards also.

Sounds like these got it right. I fish usually from north Ventura county down to redondo and I have found that the Berkley gulp camo 2 inch worms work best with an egg sinker swivel and two ft leader. Cast right where the waves break and start hookin'.

I'm the opposite of you... I started surf fishing and am not trying to learn off the boat. Anyway, what people said. If you find a sand crab bed start looking for some softshell crabs... with roe is even better. gulp if you can't find any. and yeah, go visit Surf Fishing in Southern California - SC Surf Fishing
