leopard sharks

I was fishing north of la jolla shores and i caught a leopard shark. I put it back didnt really know what to do with it plus i was under the impression that your not allowed to fish them since the shores are their breeding ground. But later I saw a guy come in off his kayak with one and he cut its head off like he was going to eat it.
Is it ok to fish for Leopard sharks?
and if so do they make a good meal?

Yes they are good to eat, just be sure to bleed them good. I have never tried it, but I hear if you soak the meat in milk it will better the flavor. Just be sure you watch out for the "killing leopards is bad karma" crew when posting your report.

Yes, you can keep them as long as they are at least 36" and not taken from the preserve and yes, they are good to eat, dress as you would any shark.

That's the ammonia, I've heard soaking in milk/bleeding counteracts this.

I think there is a season by location also.

The seasons for sharks and rockfish typically do not apply to shore based fisherman. For boats leopards generally have the same season regulations as rockfish. Typical fish and game logic.

leopards are "OK" but not worth ur effort...i let all predatory sharks swim away...we got too many darn seals, threshers and makos are delish but i feel their popularity as not only in their fighting prowness has ultimately rang the KO bell...way tooooo much pressure on them....if u catch one, take a pic and let it go,,,,i dont mind the harvesting of a single animal per year of either species as long as u dont waste it, but ppl are doin it for just recreation and overkill. u dont need to kill all o'm folks, and if u do, let the bigger breeders go, especially females, and harvest a adolescent...besides, the mercury level will be less...jus my 2cents...
