I use the Carolina rig but vary my leader length - usually start w 18 inches of #6 fluorocarbon. If the waves are bigger, I go with a shorter leader and if the waves are flat, I use up to a 3 foot leader. Then I slowly reel in my line so I can always feel my weight while fishing a 2" section of camo sandworm.

Give the area around Life Guard Station No.13 a try. Thats were the Santa River meets the Ocean. There are good numbers a Yellow Croakers and you might luck out on a Halibut.
Enjoy, LT

You are probably casting out too far if you are using a 3/4 ouce weight. Try a 1/4 or 3/8ths and carolina rig with at least one bead to make some niose. Start off letting it sit a while after you bring it in 12" at a time or thereabouts. Don't be afaid to wade out in the surf a lil' bit too. Never turn you back on the surf. There will be fish in close enough for you to see them at your feet sometimes. You will feel it when they bite, but it might be very subtle at times. Keep you finger on your line to aid in detecting the bites..

I have been fishing the bolsa chica jettie for a a while now. I like to use strips of frozen squid. Halibit go ape shit for it. You're using the right gulp for surf fishing. But in the jettie I use a 1-2 ounce triange or pyrimid weight. Keeps it from going under the bridge. Good luck.....

Here is my question though because I have been basically guessing on how to fish the gulp, camo worm. And what tide is best?
2 inch pieces Carolina rigged and a 3/4 oz drop shot weight, hook about 8 inches above weight.
Do I let it sit, jerk it, drag it???? A little help Oh and what all can you catch on the gulp worm because I picked up the gulp sand crabs. Not sure if those work?? | i do well with a drop shot setup with gulp 2" camo sandworms and they work good, caught lots surf perch and yfc on those. i usually use red #6-8 hooks. 6-8# test w/ fluoro leader (you could go lighter #). sand crabs need to be live, haven't heard of anyone killing it with the gulp ones yet. i wanna try the gulp ghost shrimp though. anyone try those with success yet?

I use the Camo Sandworms with a basic Carolina Rig, 1/2 0z. bullet slider, and about an 18" leader, and I use anywhere from a whole to a half worm, but a lot of combinations will work. Try a slow, steady retrieve until you find the zone where the fish are holding, then experiment a little. Good techniqe for Halibut and the usual surf suspects.
As for the Gulp Sandcrabs, I think they are the absolute bomb! I have caught monster Spotfin Croaker, Yellowfin Croaker, Barred Perch, Corbina, White Seabass, and even large sharks with them.
I stillfish the Gulp Sandcrabs (not moving) with a 14' surf rod and a bait cast reel. I use a dropper loop rig with about a 6 oz. pyramid sinker on the bottom to keep the rig in place, and I cast out as far as I can get, preferably into or beyond the furthest breakers. That's where the lunkers are. The best color/size is the 1" New Penny.
Check out my profile and you'll see a WSB I caught with them in August of this year.
Good luck and tight lines!
