Headed to Coronado beach at 530 am, jammin out to some ICP.
On the way some dude was on bike wit no lights on. He must want to die or something. Arrived at the beach at low tide and calm conditions. Scouted around, and found no structure.
Decided to head to my hali hole. I saw bait being chased and halibut doing back flips after them. I've heard of them jumping, but this is the first time I've seen it. Tried some dead chovies with no luck. Tied on a crock, also no luck. Of course.. the drop shot. Third cast and hooked.
And another
I could feel my weight bounce on the bottom, these fish were a distinctable Tick.
This guy was just dead weight. After a few runs I had him beached, and he flopped back in the surge. Saw that the hook was barely in his lip so I eased on the drag and was able to bring him back.
Caught this guy on the chove.
Tide was peaking and pulled all the salad on shore back into the surf, so I left.
Very cool site indeed. So rad when they fly out of the water.
My buds and I have been fishing Flatfish allot in a lagoon in really shallow water. When we make Smelt and have the Smelts balled up on the bread we have halibut rip through our bait ball or fly out of the water with a back flip... So cool stoked you saw one do it..
I saw one in Agua Hedionda that was in the 25lb class do a back flip through our bait ball.
