99% Catch and Release.

The other 1% occurred today.

Life had been pretty hectic lately with lots of doctors appointments and such to find out some stuff. So to clear my head a bit I went to get out on the water.
It was a good decision to do so even though the sun was high and the beach was filling in with more and more sun worshipers by the minute.
I started my fishin mission in Newport looking for corb's in the skinny.
My trusty Shimano Sonora has seen better day's and would reel in reverse even with the anti reverse on so I slapped on a smaller reel from a Walmart special and brought along the Sonora's spool for leader material.
I soon spotted a nice pair in a trench but they wanted nothing to do with my 2" GCSW. No crabs to be found so I decided to give mussel's a try having never used them before. Made some mussels, found my browsing fish and tossed my offering a couple yards ahead of a lone cruiser, the splash made him veer off but upon seeing the offering falling in the crystal clear water he beelined it for the mussel and 1-2-3, game on.
Full bendo action and he headed for deep water. Using the new tiny reel i knew i would have to play this one safe and waded in after him. He came back around towards my 8 and i knew he was going for the trench that was now at my 6, sprint through the water back at shore and cut him off as he got in, once he came back down the line towards me via the trench it was easy as pie to surf him in on the next wave once he was at my 12.
Turned to see a crowd behind and many congrats rather then the tree hugging haters waiting to bag on my game. Nice change. I suppose the fight tired him out because he went belly up and wouldnt revive after 5 minutes of trying. Early day cut short and fish taco's it is. Also my new PB at just shy of 21".
I'm normally 100% catch and release no matter what the fish or size but sometimes they just come home.
Personal best 'Bean and fish for lunch, just what the doctor ordered.
Here are the pic's.
6'6 clarus
random tiny Shakespeare reel
4lb test flouro
Carolina rig with #8 owner
1/2 egg.

Gracias! I was surprised how tasty he turned out to be!
Unfortunately the area has been void of any life at all, perch, 'bean's and even sandcrabs.
Every other angler I have spoken with have stated the same, looks like time for a new location.
