Last minute dive plans and ended up hitting LJ. I'll be brief. Launched out of Mission around noon and headed into the canyon. Found coffee on the north and decent water on the south side. Dropped anchor with the stern in 130'. Anchor check to deeper than I want to tell you and still could not see chain. Conditions on the bottom were clear but dark due to the algea up top blocking the light. I love those conditions since it's kinda like a night dive and the colors from my LED are really cool. I found a school of rockfish and a grip of dinky bugs. Anyway, worked my way up to 110' with the computer saying it was time to leave. I took about 15 minutes on the way up to burn off some gas. Good dive but deep dives are kinda lame being so short.
Second dive was out by the corner in 60'. We anchored on the back of the kelp and worked our way in for half and back out. Surfaced about 20' from the boat. I love that. Lot's of nice checkers and sandies cruising along with a few 3lb or so male sheephead. They did seem kind of skitish though and did not immediately come in for some Uni offerings. The kelp (like others have said) was as thick or thicker than I've seen it in a few years. No current had it sitting on the surface so that might have had something to do with it. Vis on the second dive was probably 10' or less. Large particulate.
Third dive was supposed to be in 30' down by the resi area of LJ. As I moved the boat inside the kelp, I missed the water change and we dropped anchor. Right when I killed the motor I saw the coffee again. After working free a stuck anchor, it was Barefoot Bar and Grill time!
Good first trip with a new diving crew. The day went fairly smooth and it was the first time I let someone else pull my boat.
