So far I've seen the most volume of bugs at dusk or shortly after total black out (most if not all were very short), but the best quality of bugs in the middle of the night to early morning (some shorts, but mostly legals). I've always gone out at an hour prior to the high tide and dived for at least 2 to 3 hours. The water seems to be much clearer then and there is more area to explore. I can also get much closer to the boilers with more confidence at high tide since there is a greater volume of water and the conditions clean up. Lower tides have been less productive for me due to water clarity and too much exposure of the rocks that I find the bugs on the most often.

Best time to get bugs is when the dogs don't bother you. My best trips have been full moon incoming tides and late.

I find that anytime from dusk until to moon comes out. Once the moon is out (especially on the fullmoon), the bugs seem to crawl back in their holes.

As soon as possible after the anchor is set and before anyone else goes over the side.
From the beach I like to get wet between one to two hours after sunset.
