Best time is when they are not bearing eggs, then you can keep all of them. as far as the night diving, we tried it during mini season and unless you have really good diving conditions I wouldn't night dive for them. we spent most of our dive making sure we could get back to the anchor line due to the 5' vis therefore we couldn't concentrate 100% on the bug's which we had hoped to see them out and about which they were not in that spot. personally the sand is a very big place and if they are hiding in a ledge well then that narrows my search down alot.

I have to agree that shallow diving in a short rocky area during the day works just FINE. Always do well, they do crawl well at night but if you can find rocks that are just a couple of feet , they re easy! or find some sunken light structure, boats, etc. they love em! and you get to bed at a deecent hour.

Re: Poll-What's the best time to Bug Hunt?

Went Friday after Thanksgiving Hoop Nettng off Carlsbad... best that night seemed to me approx 32 feet water... 2 keepers, 17 shorties..

Dusk, incoming tide.... from 6-8pm was all the action... after 9-midnight nuttin but eels and snails.

aftermidnight got some fuzzy crab type thing... ugly !~

Bait?
Uni goop worked pretty good...

but Cat food & Sardine/mackerel combo worked better...

Cat food 39 cents ( seafood delight )

Unigoop 5-10 bucks a bucket.

let's here it for cat food.

Re: Poll-What's the best time to Bug Hunt?

Set me straight.. do people do searches for subjects to find 6 month old posts, or more, and reply so they can show off their 'wisdom?' Or is their an issue with forums on BD?
