Re: Bug Dive 03/21/06

All legals. It was a really tough dive. Big swell, really bad surge and maybe 3-4 ft of vis. If I hadn't been on tanks there was no way I would have been able to grab any bugs. It was one of the toughest beach dives I've ever done.

Oh yeah, the smoke is a way to expand my lungs after all that dry tank air.......................

Re: Bug Dive 03/21/06

Here's my version: I'm relatively new to diving having just been certified at the end of August. I've never caught a bug and never done a night dive. So last night was my first night dive and I was hoping to catch my first bug before the season ends tonight at midnight. Holy shit, what a night! The air temp was 50 the water was about the same and the thermocline was absolutely freezing, the swells were 3+ft. at 10 second intervals and the surge was fierce. The vis was about 3 feet only at a depth of 30 feet, the rest of the water column was zero. I was supposed to stay close to Marcus, but I lost him immediately on the descent, because he re-surfaced. So I stayed close to his buddy Chris, who is an advanced diver. Chris takes off due west and I tried to stay close. I was terrified! I saw a shark, that didn't help. It was a docile Horn Shark, but it still freaked me out. At this point I’m thinking screw the bugs I just need to stay alive! Chris grabbed two bugs and I saw only one bug and it looked like a crawdad, so I didn't bother. Then, when it was time to surface, we were about ¼ mile offshore…not looking good for a surface swim. I can see Marcus on the beach flashing his light at us. Of course he’s already got a full bag-o-bugs, he just puts his bag on the ocean floor and they line up and walk in…BASTARD! I made the swim from hell and survived! Brutal! Marcus’ other buddy Mark is a free diver and he came in with an octopus and 1 bug. The final tally was 6 legals and 1 octopus. Marcus was kind enough to give me two of his bugs so the wife would believe that I went Lobster Diving and not to the tittie bar. I can’t wait to make another night dive!

I have heard that is one of the best shore dive spots we have around here. I do not know if you know about this website, but it has some great info on shorediving spots. Good reviews too.

Re: Bug Dive 03/21/06

Malaga is a great spot to shoredive. It is easy access, the reef has a good amount of life on it. The only problem I've ever seen is the lack of kelp. If you do a beach entry it is a long swim to get to any areas with kelp. There are some better shoredives on the PV peninsula but very few of them have such easy access to the water (easy hikes to the beach as opposed to Bataan death march cliffs). Thanks for the link thats a cool site.
