Spear fishing in the kelp?

I started a post yesterday on this but it went missing..

I have seen guys swimming around in the kelp, Only assume they are spear fishing. I would like to try it out, looks like fun and on the slow days fishing it may increase my odds of taking home fish. Any tips?

Also think it would be cool to make my own sling. I have been a metal fabricator for 20 plus years and good with my hands (ask the Ladies) im thinking of making one out of Aluminum rod. Is this a bad Idea? Any tips on slings...1/4"rod? 1/2rod? 4'long? Aluminum? fiberglass? ect..

Thanks
Gut

you land some big fish with the proper equipment spearfishing and its an adventure every time you go out.

check out this site: Freediving and Spearfishing Tips and Techniques, its a good source to get you some start up info and a better chance of getting fish your first couple times out. its definitely not easy but i feel it is much more rewarding to land a lunker with a speargun or pole spear and i'm sure that doubles if you make your own. research the pole spear (sport chalet has some) and copy, go out and try it and make your own personal adjustments. a lot of guys make their own guns as well.

...just don't run up on a paddy and jump in the water when there are boats working it, there are some pissed off old salty drunks in these so cal waters and sinkers will probly start flyin.

Check out spearboard.com too

You may want to wait on making your own spear for a bit and learn how to dive/spear first with store bought gear.

Also going to a San DIego Freedivers meeting (there's one this monday oct 25) and you will get some good info.

You want a spear GUN, Not a spear SLING for kelp bed diving

And the kelp will grab you and drown you.

start shallow in the eel grass with the sling.
