Practice makes perfect

So, i decided to do a dive yesterday in Carlsbad. Called up a few buddies and hit the water artound 5pm, 3 of us out at the first spot 2 packing polespears and 1 on gun. Water was pretty stirred up at the sheaphead spot so we packed it up and moved to a near by reef, water was clean and clear. Started off with a nice bass and picked up a few sargo then i see a large shovel nose crusing under me, called gun boy over but couldnt find him, so i tell myself if i see another one iam taking the shot, so after chasing around a few large model crokers and not getting lucky, i spot anotht shovel out the corner of my eye, so i grab onto a rock and wait, he swims right in front of me and BAM I nailed him broadside rigth behind his head, he starts thrashing so i grab the polespear and wrap my legs around him and swim for the surface. I come up screaming i got that bastard. so now i have this large 3foot plus shovel nose wraped between my legs and i start swiming to shore, on my way in i spot another huge croker so i put the shovel on the fish stringer and take aim, only to miss cause the damn things thrashing around, Long story short it was the best hour and a half in the water i have had in a while, plenty of fish seen and just enough taken to feed the fam.

Pics to come

Get out there and get some, dont forget the GATKU polespear meet is coming up, and practice makes perfect.

When stir fried with monkey-chunks, they are reported to be pretty good.

So, how do you prepare them, and how do they taste?

Shovelnose taste pretty good guys. Used to catch them off the piers as a kid, if you eat fish tacos anywhere from Rosarito to Guerrero Negro, you are eating shovelnose tacos. When you catch one, just cut the head off and gut it quickly, let it soak in the ocean for a little bit; it will take out any heavy taste. Cooks up firm and white. If I keep one nowadays, I will only grab a tanker over 20-25lb.
