Mask and Snorkel for free diving recommendations please

So I am tired of messing around with crappy gear and pretty much want the best mask and snorkel combo out there.

So far I have looked at the Mares, the Xvision, or Xvision Liquid Skin seem to be good masks.

Fins I have some I like, but I am getting frustrated with my crappy leaky mask and snorkel...

Thanks for any advice.

Also, if there is a good online place to save some dough, I'd appreciate that as well.

You need to find a good mask that fits so me recommending what I like probably won't work for you if your face is a different shape. personally I would look for a low volume mask for freediving, Omer, Riffe are good ones to start with. For the snorkel I highly recommend the Riffe Stable, best snorkel on the market in my opinion.

Thanks. I'll get that snorkel then.

As far as the mask, I'll try some on. I figured I'd ask as I can imagine they feel different in the store, then on your face in the water after 30 min. or so.

Thanks for the fast reply.

I've been freediving mission bay a few times this week for lobster with 0 luck. Also tried sunset cliffs for nothing.

I know daytime is not the best, but I have not seen a bug in 3 swims

Ordering a light and we'll see how the night works out.

Re: Mask and Snorkel for free diving recommendations please

Here's a second vote for the Riffe Stable snorkle. I was kind of skeptical but a buddy kept ranting about them so I finally caved. Holy shit! I've been freediving and snorkling since I was a little kid and this is by leaps and bounds the best snorkle I've tried.

The mask on the other hand is difficult. You really have to go out and try every one until you find the one that fits your face. I have a very low volume Cressi that fitsme....

You need to stick your head in places that you think you shouldn't During the day you have to be looking under every ledge and in every crevice possible, eel grass too. They are there, a small light will also help you check the ledges and crevices faster during the day.

Look for garibaldis and swim at them, they will most likely swim into a hole or crevice. Look in their house, they don't mind living in a roach motel...

Thanks. A light is in store for purchase on Saturday.

I'll be at it every day next week.

Reports to follow

Re: Mask and Snorkel for free diving recommendations please

When you try on a mask hold your breath and compress the mask to your face.

A good fitting mask will stay stuck to your face and also feel comfortable at the same time.

Re: Mask and Snorkel for free diving recommendations please

I was very impressed with the Atomic Aquatic masks. They are frameless and ultra wide angle for an incredibly clear view. Unfortunately they cost $100, out of my price range for a mask. I tried it on at OEX on Rosecrans. I ended up with a Cressi-sub Sirena which has been a great mask.
