Pole spear is an easy, pretty cheap way to get started. No need to go crazy on equipment; see if you like it first. That said, I just dove head first into the sport and, well, I hope it sticks.

If your just starting out I would also recommend breathing (and not)technique!
The key is learning to stay relaxed and focused,I find myself alot of times on the freeway practicing my relaxing ,breathing deep getting as much of my blood oxygenated ,taking deeeep breaths and holding of my breath... Ill be the first to admit,Ive still got a long way to go though.
Stay hungry and have fun bro!

I've been S-Fishing for about 15 years. I would recomend the JBL Sawed off Magmun.
1. The price is right.
2. decent range.
3. Not too powerful as to bend the shaft if you hit a rock.
4. Not too long as to be akward.
5. It was my first gun and still is a good go-to gun for Catalina.
On the other hand it is a loud gun when fired. On the long shot a Calico will have just enough time to get out of the way when fired (If he already sees and is watching you). But as I tell friends I hunt with it will make you a better hunter and more stelth. All other fish don't stand a chance. It's loads of fun.

There is plenty of power to get through a big fish. If you hit the "spot" it'll be fine. As with any gun if you miss the spot on a big boy without a reel, or a float your in for a fight, but even then, dam it's exciting when there is a good fight. Those are the ones you remember the best.
Seriously it is a great starter gun and you will end up with one that size anyway...Once you get into it you will have a colection of them. You don't only have one fishing pole, do you??
We could meet up in Catlalina (I'll be out alot in October for the bugs) and you can try it out.

You know, a JBL is a complete pile of shit as they come from the manurefacturer. I was sponsored by them, and we had to modify the living daylights out of them to make them work. You want a GOOD GUN??!! Go to Hammerhead Muzzles: Spear gun modification, Diving Gear . Talk to Kevin. Get yourself a 90cm evolution gun. Costs almost the same as a JBL, but these guns are accurate and fast. Go to Spearboard Spearfishing Community - Powered by vBulletin , and search the Hammerhead spearguns in the California section. Hawaii Skin Diver magazine just tested guns, and they won the overall test. I have a few if you would like to try one. I also have some different Riffe guns you can try if you would like. The Riffe guns are good, but they cost a bit more than you will want to spend right now on a speargun.

Slinging is the ticket for a beginner. Later on you should get a gun. I like using the stangard JBL brass sling. The guns they make do suck but thier slings are good as hell..
