Any good places to use a pole spear near the central coast of california (morro bay)?

I'm just starting to get into freediving and have a pole spear. I have all the necessary equipment (not the good shit, but my stuff functions decently). I was thinking Montana D'orro? (is that what it's even called? I've been away from SLO too long...)

That pole spear won't protect you from Great Whitey.

I can't remember the name of the shop, but Anthony Reynolds owns a dive shop on South Higuera St (down by the Kawasaki shop). They should be able to hook you up.

My brother was a commercial abalone diver for a number of years in SB and the Farrallons. Send me a PM and I'll give you his contact info. He lives in Solvang now, but we both grew up in SLO.

Go just north of the rock, in the warm water outlet from the power plant. Go out to the tip between Morro rock and the smaller piece of rock that sticks up. About 20' there and warmer than everywhere else. Plenty of big lings there. If you go away from the rock, in the flat sand are some BIG hali's. Got to be quiet to get close to them, they don't like bubble machines. Perch like to swim in the channel just offshore.

Of course, you have to pick a day with no surf. Also, stay outside the surf zone so you don't get run over by some surfer.

I don't recommend inside the harbor as there are lots of boats. If you do go there, make sure the tide is slack or coming in. The current will take out, way out!
