Re: good spear tip for pole spear?

If your just cruising the surf than that tip should be fine but there are brass based paralizers that are better balanced and barbed. For bigger game, a 1/3 or 1.4" barbed tiped is the way to go..

Re: good spear tip for pole spear?

Depends on the fish. Use a slip-tip for BIG fish. For smaller stuff a standard two flopper rock tip will work. However, the 3-prong is not bad for small game. As long as it has barbs on it.

Re: good spear tip for pole spear?

I can say with confidence that a slip tip is the way to go. These tips are narrow so they slide through the fish easily and don't come back out. Double floppers are too wide and 3-prongs fall out easily. In my opinion this is the best tip for anything worth spearing around here. Like this one by Gat-Ku:

Paralyzer tips got their name for what happens when you shoot a big fish with one: He swims off with 3 marks on him, and your ego gets paralyzed. They are good for small fish, and miracle shots. If you want to shoot bigger fish, use a slip tip. If you want a tip for small& mid size fish, use a 5 prong with barbs. But be warned: a 5prong chopper will cut a small perch right in half when you shoot it!!

thats great, iam a total visual person and i can see that happening no problem... so lets say for halibut is the flopper better or the breakaway? now i've never hit a fish that fought after hiting it, maybe lucky shot or maybe to small of fish ive gotten some good size pearch and quite a few nice bass, no butts

I don't like flopper tips much on a polespear, for one reason: You don't control the shaft the same way you do when you spear with a gun. All your motions are exaggerated by the length and rigidity of the polespear. So, with a flopper, I have actually pushed the shaft, and the flopper closed, and when I pulled back, the flopper stayed down, and I pulled the damn spear right out of the fish!!Whooped my own ass!!! For halibut, I like to use an icepick, then a 6 point circle tip with barbs( Australian), then a 5 point trident type tip. With the icepick, I shoot at angle if I have any worries about rock under the fish. In sand, I will shoot straight down on them.
