newb Q's

I'm just thinking about getting a speargun, and need to know which one to get. I can only spend about $150 so I need to know which gun to get. Also, do free divers use diving weights? And, how do I get to a good spearfishing area on either my dad's boat or off of the beach?
Thanks,
Cody

Re: newb Q's

get a 75 cm euro gun to start. you can find one for less than a hundred. omer or beachat (sp) make awesome guns, and yes we use weights. the trick is to be neutral at 15 feet so you can avoid sinking when or if you have shallow water blackout. for more info go to spearboard.com and try the search button and look up whatever you want, just make sure you search before you ask, you will find most if not all you answers there. good luck and happy hunting

Cody, go to Hammerhead Muzzles: Spear gun modification, Diving Gear And get yourself a 90cm gun. A 75cm gun will be too short for most of your fish hunting. A 90 is not too long, and can reach out far enough to make your diving fun. Tell Kevin that Paul sent you, and that you are just starting. You can get a lot of good info on spearboard, and find some guys to dive with.

Re: newb Q's

I am new to spearfishing as well, but what I have heard from a lot of people is to stay away from the JBLs. It will cost quite a bit to upgrade and they have a very loud trigger mechanism. The more you load them up, the harder the trigger pull will. I have a little JBL and with two bands, it is pretty damn hard to pull the trigger. I was fortunate to get a used Riffe C2s for very cheap from a guy on Spearboard.com. I can't wait to use it.

Truth be told, all the euros work the same. It's kinda like pick a color..... the JBL is like NASCAR. To get one that works, it might LOOK like a regular JBL, but it is modified to death. Only things I would consider for a euro gun are parts and service availability. All of them use the same shafts.

Riffe guns are definitely the way to go.

Make sure to register on spearboard.com
There are alot of divers with many years' experience on that site, and they are eager to help a newbie.

Just use the search function to search your topic. If you can't find it, you'll get alot of helpful answers by starting a new thread.

Welcome to spearfishing!!!

Re: newb Q's

For all the stories and local SD knowledge cruise down tro harbor island across from the airport and go to Jay and Jay dive and kite and make sure Marc is working. He has a ton of spearfishing gear as well as kite surfing gear. He is incredibly knowledgable and produces quality trophy fish. Let him know Land Rover Ryan sent you in. He will take care of you regardless.
