Redondo 20lb halibut and a limit of bugs 2/6

Decided last minute to go do a dive and Mike(Rustyhook) and Jeff decided to come along for the ride and do a little night fishing.

We left the dock at 8:30pm and headed to one of my reef spots. When I got to the bottom I started seeing small lobsters but quickly caught 2 legals then I see some structure with more shorts and as I am looking around I spot a nice halibut.

Since I did not have my speargun I decided to bag the halibut in my Trident lobster bag.

I set the bag down on the sand right in front of the halibuts head then with the bag open I grab the halibuts tail and scare it into the bag and this thing is bucking all over the place.

I get the halibut back down to the sand and start punching the halibuts head thru the bag and it calms down.

I then started swimming looking for more lobster and bag 2 more lobsters but while I was bagging the lobsters the halibut starts kicking and gets out of the bag and swims off so I chase it down and bag it again but this time I take the halibut to a wooden piling and punched it again.

Ok back to lobster hunting again and I find 3 more lobster to round out my limit and of coarse while I am bagging the lobster the halibut gets out again but did not have no fight left in it and I quickly bag it again and surface.

Mike started to filet the fish before I took this picture so you can see the center line cut.

After my dive we move over the reef and start fishing and the fish were on the chew. We caught about 15 sandbass,2 calico's and 6 sculpin in about 45min so needless to say we had a fun night out on the water.

Glad to see you got to use the trick this year. Let's figure out a time to kill some bugs soon.

.... I just got a visual of that happening underwater. I like how you just went back to searching for lobsters, like it was no biggie! Very cool pics, and report! Can't wait to do some more night dives.

When you said "wooden piling" I was thinking of the old pier just off the jetty...I should have known you be past 100ft.
