Redondo dive report 10-12-06

Headed up to Redondo after work to meet with Roger (Scubapro5). My brother and I boarded the boat and we headed out to the breakwall. I was torn as Roger asked where to go. I had heard PV has been really good. The word was the breakwall had been slow but it was starting to pick up. We decided to dive the breakwall as it was right there. The water was flat and there was no wind. It looked like conditions would be excellent. Little did I know......

Hit the bottom and the surge was miserable. It was the worst surge I have ever experienced there. At one point on my dive I was at 15-18' when the surge came in. I got completely pushed up the breakwall and popped out on the surface. I swam down to the bottom quickly and stayed near the bottom of the breakwall the rest of the time. My brother and I got our limits in 2 dives with a 50/50 mix of just legals along with some nicer 3-5lb bugs. Roger dropped in on one of his deep spots and ended up with 6 nice bugs. It was an awesome time and it was good to dive with Roger again.

Here's some observations from the dive:

It never fails when there is a ton of surge and you are going to get banged into rocks that:
1. It is always your head or face that willl find the rocks first.
2. There will be sculpin everywhere. It's a miracle I didn't get spined by one of them.
3. Right as you are about to grab a big bug you WILL get surged off of it.

Lobsters eat their molts. I had no idea they did this but when I found an area with molts in it I would also find a bunch of lobsters chewing on them.

Marcus, I told you, now that you moved, you are no longer welcome here. Locals only dude!

Glad you made it up to grab some critters. Must suck to have to drive an hour to do it. I know you are gonna find the holes down there soon. I'm tellin you, find out where Pipes is down there, my buddy slays 'em there.
