Re: Abalone Diving

thanks sage! i'll send you pm. we usually do the salmon and crab combo along with diving. did someone say weed? hmmm.... i'm IN!

Mike, as far as i know wild caught abalone is illegal to purchase/sell. i think it is even more than $75/lb. though even on the black market. i guess they may reopen commercial ab diving this year. lots of controversy on that.

Martin, good luck on your trip. definitely let us know how it goes. hope the weather cooperates for you. what area are you going to?

thanks,
marc

Re: Abalone Diving

Man, how times have changed.
I remember when my family used to BBQ at Mission Beach Park. 20-22 yrs ago. My dad would pull up these huge flat "snails" from the rocks. Must have been 8-10 inches at the widest point.
Threw them on the BBQ and we ate good.

Not exactly sure since I am going for my first time with someone else. All I do know is it is somewhere about 100 miles north of San Fran. We will be shore diving fairly shallow (like 20-25 feet). The trip is still up in the air at this time as we still have to see how the weather is going to be. I will know for sure on sunday or monday. If I do go I will be sure to give you guys the full report. Keeping my fingers crossed that I do not run into Big Daddy!

Re: Abalone Diving

Stillwater Cove has a great campsite and and lots of beach access to the north or straight out.

Hot showers!

Enjoy

Re: Abalone Diving

I dive the North Coast every other week. I can recommend lots of good places for abs and ling cod. Just remember on the North Coast the weather determines the dive location. You can get the local dive conditions by calling 707-847-3222 any day for swell, tide, temp, and sometimes viz info.
I have access to a house if anyone is willing to trade boat rides for a nice place to stay. Last weekends trip brought back two nice lings (6# & 9#) and three abs all over 9". All shore diving as usual. Gotta love it when the swell is below 7'. Santino

Abalone, Dungeoness Crab, and Salmon all in one day.... Bodega Bay... Crabalone Fest we called it... Those were the days, when the weather would let you get out.
