is there any kind of way you have to approch them are is it just go all out and get as close as you can and shoot because calico bass you can just swim right up to and shoot unlike bigger game fish

If you are on a paddy, just kick in close to the paddy and hang, the yellows will come around soon, they tend to circle the paddy, just wait till they get close.

At san clemente we look for puddlers, drop in nearby quietly!!!! , about 50', kick and try to get in front of the school, the first ones that pass are usually far, the rest of the school seems to relax and get closer as they pass you!

Make sure you are not near any other boaters, its rude to try and spear a fish near guys soaking a bait and you will probably get snagged by an iron!

o ok just wanted to know because every time im at catalina im swimming next to the kelp and every once and a while ill look outward and see a baitball and see a yellow and i go to get close to him and the shoot off into deeper watter so ok know i know thanks for the info

It sounds like you're acting too aggresively in the water. Try not making eye contact with them and move as slowly as possible and as fluidly as possible. If you're herky jerky underwater you make the fish nervous.

Easiest way to get a fish interested in you is to swim away from it. I would recommend getting a white/yellow glove and or some type of bright flasher to bring them in. The other thing I do--although I know much of the board will not agree with me--is to load your gun before you jump in the water. Too many times I have jumped in and had fish swim right up to me only to be loading my gun at the time. It is your call and extra safety has to be taken...Just a thought.

What I do is Ill drop in on a paddy about 10-20 yards upswell,I cock my gun before dropping in,if I see YT on the paddy Ill take a few breaths ,try to relax and then Ill turn away from the fish and paddy and dive down.
Ill keep my gun pointed forward and wait for them to come around,they usually do.Whats really trippy is you can actually see the inquisitiveness in their eye when you pull the trigger.

wear white cotton gloves...when you see them coming, drop down about 10' , hang there and extend your left arm outward, wiggling your fingers to look like a squid...often, they will circle you or a fish or two will break off to come in close and check out the possible free meal...big yellows will instantly head down and wrap the nearest kelp stalk or reef when speared..you will have to shortline them and hang on or they will wrap, get tension and rip off...had a 60 pound yellow take me down 30' in 6 seconds once and I was already down 40' when I shot him.... cut or rip out a couple of gills so your yellow will pump out most of the blood....improves the taste mucho...
