Eastern Sierra Long Ranger

I met Doug on the M&M Rods Charter on the Angler in October of '06. He was fortunate enough to be on the cows in '05. Got to know him a little and seem to run into him several times a year up at Crowley on the docks as he's headed out or coming in. Doug guides for Tom Loe of Sierra Drifters.

Doug Rodricks

He just got off the 10.5 day on the Angler and did well again. Here's the report from the Angler's website. He finished second in the JP with the 234. Way to go Doug!

THUR. JAN. 10, 2008 GOOD FISHING

Today the wind backed off and our guys in the mast really took advantage. They got us in fishy zones all morning as we enjoyed great fishing on 40-80lb fish. After a morning of jerking and puling we asked the guys to put us on some trophy sized fish and once again they came through. They got us in a birded up zone where we saw the unmistakable meter marks of big fish. We were lucky enough to hook four fish and land them all with 75% of those weighing over two hundred pounds.

"And finally Doug Rodricks from Sierra Drifters Guide Service in Bishop, CA landed a 225lber to go along with his 234 he got two days ago."

Complete trip wrap up here: Current Conditions

"ROD ROCKS" is the MAN, a helluva fisherman and a real nice guy. I'm going to be emailing him soon to see if I can get up to Mammoth to fish with him. He also does pretty good DVD's of the LR trips he goes on too.

Hey Paul, speaking of good long range DVD's, when are you guys going to come out with a new flick? I need something new to keep me warm through these cold winter months. Sorry about the threadjack Steve.

Re: Eastern Sierra Long Ranger

we're sooooo close to putting out a new one, it's not even funny. it was a 10-day braid trip, but we've been swamped lately with some AD-work, brochures, blah blah blah you name it. it's coming.... SOON! i promise, you won't be disappointed either, it's a good one. thanks for the interest!

as for going up to mammoth to fish with the Sierra Drifters, i'm pretty serious about it Steve! i'm going to email ROD ROCKS today. i was bummed i didn't go down to chat with him at the dock. but who's fault was that?

...yeah, that was mine.

Re: Eastern Sierra Long Ranger

You all know of course that we enjoy year round fishing up here. When the lakes and streams close on November 15th, we still can fish Pleasant Valley Reservoir and the Owens River. Also, Topaz on the CA/NV border opened 1/1 and provides anglers another venue. Doug's a helluva fisherman and a great guy. He has a bitchen boat that he uses up at Crowley and then this time of the year, the guys guide the Owens and sometimes they take their customers in the drift boats and anglers get to fish areas untouched by bank fishermen. I'm told C&R days of 40 fish happen all the time.

Re: Eastern Sierra Long Ranger

So we had a bumpy ride down the first night, but by morning it was pretty smooth. Our first stop produced a cow, good way to start. I hooked my cow (234) right at sunset and fought it for about 45 mins. This thing was the toughest fish I've ever done battle with. I wish I had this guy on film. He would go straight out and surface, then come up and down and charge the boat. This would go on about 3 or 4 times. When the 4 gaffs finally went in him, out came the bat and tuna spike. On deck he was still alive and kicking as if he could've just swam away if turned loose. On day 2 I scratched, but day 3 I found a willing participant (225). Overall, a slower trip, but in my opinion, presentation was everything. Guys were throwing 135# Izor all day for nothing, and then I throw in with 200# Soft Steel and get bit. Go figure, the right bait in the right place. Oh yeah, I hooked a sea lion to spice things up a bit and relieve the guys of the annoyance.

Try User CP and go from there. I'm no good at pics, can't remember how I managed to get my pic on there. All thumbs, no brains.

Thanks Steve. So I'm thinking maybe an 8 day in June. Any trips for you on the Angler?

8 days are great. We've been doing the 7 day Zuker G Loomis trip for a couple of years and are booked again this year. Book it, we can carpool.
