Isla Guadalupe-Great White Shark Attack Video-October 2007

Great White Shark Attack-Caught On Video! - Scuba PRWire

All Regions (Including International) (Scuba PRWire) Mon, 08-Oct-2007
- Adventure seekers hoping to encounter Great White sharks on a recent adventure vacation with SharkDiver.com got more than they bargained for last week when a 15 foot white shark explosively attacked a seal right in front of astonished divers.

"We were in the middle of cage diving operations on the back deck of the MV Islander when all of a sudden a 6 foot geyser of black foam and red blood erupted 50 yards from our position. I immediately deployed the shark research team from CICIMAR with video cameras and they caught a rarely seen white shark feeding event and repeated attacks on a 7 foot long resident Elephant Seal (Mirounga angustirostris)."

"The attacks lasted about 15 minutes and having witnessed a 'full on' predation first hand I have a new appreciation for the whites we encounter here. After four years of personal observations with these animals it's always good to be reminded of the power of this top ocean predator", said Australian born Luke Tipple, dive operations manager for Shark Diver and host of upcoming television series Wild Side Encounters.

"In 6 years of operations at this unique dive site, there have only been two recorded surface shark attacks on seals, this one was nothing short of spectacular. Today we decided to release this video to the general public", added eco-adventurer and Shark Diver CEO Patric Douglas after reviewing the video.

"We have research data showing these sharks actively stalking the smaller Guadalupe Fur Seals (pups and adults) early in the shark season," says Douglas. "By November these pups are quite big and begin to play offshore, which is the equivalent of ringing the dinner bell for larger female whites who need to consume mass quantities of food to fuel up for the winter and for breeding season."

Located 210 miles off the coast of Mexico, Isla Guadalupe has become the worldwide recognized dive destination for an unprecedented number of Great White sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) and provides exceptional opportunities for divers seeking encounters with these misunderstood denizens of the deep.

The Shark Diver crew, lead by dedicated shark specialists in conjunction with U.C Davis and CICIMAR's research teams, documented this rare attack on the surface and from below and will be studying it in depth in the coming months.

There are few places in the world that feature consistent sightings and interactions with Great White sharks as Isla Guadalupe, Mexico.

No argument from us...the inflatable is the last piece of hard wear you want at I.G this time of year...yet some think it's just fine to tool around in them. Frankly, I want as much wood, resin, fiberglass, and nails between me and any 15 foot white shark I can get.

Not 2mm worth of rubber and some stale air

Pretty cool! I saw one at the Lupe "Blow up" about 50' off the stern of the Legend last October. We think he hunted down a wounded Tuna that a guy lost beneath the boat moments before. It came completely out of the water like you see on Discovery channel and then thrashed on the surface afterwords for a good 2 minutes. It was was awesome but it scared the shit out of me!

We were at the island from 10/10-10/15 and had a 15 footer under the boat most of the trip that probably ate 70% of what was brought to the boat for the first 2 days. One day alone I estimated that based on what was left of the fish, it had to have put 400lb. of tuna (Chris, i think 1/4 of that was your fish!) in it's stomach. Wonder if this was the same critter?

Re: Isla Guadalupe-Great White Shark Attack Video-October 2007

So if these divers get their way...it looks like Guadalupe would be closed to sportfishing. From this guys website:

And what's with the Islander supporting this?

The Guadalupe Island Conservation Fund was established in early 2007 by the members of the scuba diving and eco-community to support and raise money to help the Government of Mexico protect the endangered shark population of Isla Guadalupe and to channel money from growing white shark tourism into local conservation-related projects on the island. This fund is managed by MarineBio.org, a US 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of marine life.

The Need

Isla Guadalupe is one of Mexico's newly created Biosphere Reserves. Its remote location and lack of basic infrastructure makes enforcement and protection of its unique and endemic wildlife species a real challenge. Your donations will go a long way toward the creation of a world class Biosphere dedicated to shark science and protection. The need to protect the waters of Isla Guadalupe is urgent.

Over the last few decades, white shark populations worldwide have been vanishing; estimates range between a 70-90% decline of its global population size. Though they are protected in Australia, the US, and South Africa, the Isla Guadalupe population is in Mexican waters. Great whites are listed as endangered in Mexico; however there are no resources to dispatch park rangers in small enforcement vessels to protect them. Their territory unfortunately intersects with large commercial fishing fleets, putting them in great jeopardy. They are also targeted by sport fishermen and commercially for their fins, teeth, and jaws. Their large size, slow reproductive rate, and decreasing population makes them highly vulnerable to overfishing.

You can help. Not only are you protecting a majestic and important species, you’re protecting other inhabitants of the region as well, and your generous donation is tax deductible. Additionally, donations at select levels will have the opportunity to take advantage of several gifts, ranging from DVDs, to bottles of Shark Trust Wines, to free trips to the island. We want our most generous donors to see these incredible animals in order to fully appreciate that they are contributing to the long-term protection of white sharks.

The Guadalupe Island Conservation Fund is actively supported by a concerned group of dive operators and their clients who make Isla Guadalupe their seasonal home. The fund is open to everyone and we are also looking for serious partnerships within the dive community and beyond.

The owner operators of the MV Nautilus Explorer, MV Islander, MV Horizon and MV Ocean Odyssey along with SharkDiver.com and DivingWithSharks.com are working to make this fund an ongoing reality.Tax deductible donations even as small as $20.00 will go a long way toward protecting this incredible eco-resource! The funds will be used to assist the park staff and park rangers to protect the area as well as to conduct important research that will help us better understand the majestic and mysterious white sharks and other native species of Isla Guadalupe.
